Is the main purpose of an aftermarket chassis to lower the cg? I am the draftsman at a sheetmetal and machine shop, and was thinking of building my own chassis and was wondering what makes a better than stock chassis.

The purpose of a better chassis is link geometry mostly, CG is mostly dependent on length of shocks and where the weight is. There is no best chassis, there are a bunch of chassis's that work great out now, SWX, GC2, LS2, CDW, etc...

Yeah, the term "best" is really dependant on your needs. Some chassis have more room for a dig w/ included servo mount. Some need something tiny like the Eritex to fit. Some guys want long shocks, some want no shocks. When it comes down to it, proper setup is key. So buy someting popular, becasue you'll be able to find a wealth of set-up suggestions through fellow crawlers both locally, and on here.

As far as a dig goes, you can buy something cheap like an HR. or spend money on he quality crafsmansship of something like the VP or Eritex. Just remember in most instances, you get what you pay for. Or you can buy cheap, and buy twice.
