I'm also wondering what the best way to go is. The RTR has a 27T motor, will the standard esc be okay for a 55T or will I need to can both the motor and the esc and replace the whole lot? I could use a few tips on pinion sizes as well. Last edited by Chiefy; 01-09-2011 at 12:54 PM. |

Everyone says the 55 is to slow but it really depends on your crawling situation. If you need a slow technical speed to navigate tricky spots and lots of torque, a 55 is great. If you want speed, the 55 will suck. If you want to try it pick up the Axial 55t for like 14 bucks and see if you like it.

I have now played with several different wind motors from 27T, 35T, 45T, 55T, and 65T....by far, hands down, THE BEST THING IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD is a good handwound 35T motor. The low end torque and the resolution, and the top speed are unmatched. I love my 35T motors. I have an HH 35T and a Brood 35T. Both are excellent. As for pinion, 16 tooth or 18 tooth with a 35T motor is about perfect. I prefer the faster 18T, but that is just me. Casey |

I run Integy 45T's in both my AX and XR. I think in general, a 45T makes a good balance between torque and wheel speed when needed. I plan on upgrading to Holmes Hobbies 45T Sport's when they become available again. But a lot depends on your terrain and driving style, and basic personal preference. I personally think 55T's are just too slow, and lack the wheel speed needed for "jumps". IMHO, YMMV, etc. |

IMOP and were I do alot of my crawling here in CO i like the tourque of the 55t, but like said in the other posts it is slow. If you not needed speed however I think the 55 is great.

A 55t is going to be too slow. Get a good quality 45t or even 35t, and you won't give up any of the low speed control over a 55t, and will have the wheel speed you'll need for many situations. Look over the forum here, you'll find most run 35t-45t in comp crawlers. |

I would say 35t just to be safe, you can always gear it down. If you are going to do any lose dirt, sand or snow you will want wheel speed. Also i have noticed that its nice to have it on some hill climbs. I will tell you when it comes to a motor, you get what you pay for. The difference between 10$ 35t and a handwound 35t are huge.
