Running a smaller pinion might stop your smoking motor. 23 tooth

I would expect that if it were taken care of properly, it'd work just fine.

But seriously, 23 tooth pinion on a 45 turn motor on 3s is fine. i ran 20 teeth on my 35 turn on 3s. It never smoked, but it did like to singe my fingers

Ever cleaned the motor or changed the brushes or cleaned the commutator that helps a lot

PS: clean tires grip better

I smoked my 55t with a 20 tooth pinion on a 7 cell nimh pack, thanks to a nice wheel bind.

14 tooth on a 45t with 3s is almost too much speed at times for my taste, but it has the crawl torque I want still. Now if I could quit breaking links and drive lines I would be much happier.

i love the power i make now, i have never had a fast crawler before its neat. but your best bet for a strong running gear is...
mip shafts
titanium out put shafts for the trans
you could go all metal gearing in the trans
heavy duty gear set for the axles
metal wheel hexes
metal steering components

Im running metal shafts titanium out put shafts and havet broken once. other then when i did a 2 foot droop and bent my steering outta whack
first comp is may first im ready to break !^@%#$
