Default Project "Sierra Rocks" has started (Mayhem got axed...))

Just a quick intro. I've always been a nitro fan and my favorite now is the Savage X. I went to a G6 crawler scale comp a while back and liked what I saw. I'm kinda on a budget and I know RC is inexpensive (hahaha). I've been searching ebay/craigs for a while to find a crawler rig I can move up into. You know, something that is not RTC, needs work, and some TLC.

Enter my project"Mayhem", a ebay score. Got it for $325. It has tons of mods, including a VR dig.

Here is what the seller said...
Here are the list of hop-ups installed on this crawler:

-HBZ Warthog Comp Tube Chassis with Carbon Fiber Sideplates
-STRC Aluminum C-Hubs
-STRC Aluminum Steering Knuckles
-STRC Aluminum Rear Lockouts with steel drive shafts on rear axles
-STRC Aluminum Skid
-Losi Comp Crawler Shocks
-Aluminum four-link mount
-MIP Center CVD
-Steel Heavy Duty CVD on the front axles (Stock Axial dogbones and Axial front wheel axles will be included)
-Wheels are Axial with Losi Rock Claw tires (Weighted on the front and rear)
-Extra spare parts and screws
-Traxxas 1200 mah nmh battery
-Tekin FXR esc and Tekin 55t brushed motor
-Visionary Fabrication dig system with full sized carbon fiber servo mount (servo is mounted and dig system works well)

I got to work on getting a Tx/rx. Probably a better steering servo. I run NiMh on my nitros but will think about going to a lipo setup. The problem is my charger is not a good one for lipos. Oh well, just more $$ spent.

As always, I won't know what I've got till the seller ships. It maybe a complete pile of used and abused parts or it may be a rig in good condition. I've got a zillion questions on builds and setups but I need some time to absorb what I just bought. I've been doing a ton of reading on this forum and want to learn from other members what works and what doesn't. My 391 newbie questions will begin shortly.

Thanks, Brian

First of all welcome to your new addiction. I also started in the Nitro realm and moved over to the Crawlers. Great score on the Wart Hog Chassis. I was actually watching that item for a project I am starting to collect items for. Take the time to read many of threads on here. They have tons and tons of useful information.

^^ don't you have some church sponsored family run thing to be at?
Quit bagging the new guy.

Anyway... Looks like a Nice start. You might want to consider a new name for it though. Would not want you mistaken for this tool.

Since Mayhem is already "taken", my wife suggested I call the new(I mean ebay used) "Pus_y Wagon" Anyone take that name yet, LOL?

Now, back to a more serious measure... As to not offend anyone, the new and improved name will be "Sierra Rocks"

So, is the Visionary Fabrication DIG unit any good?

I've done some internet and RC Crawler searches and I can't find much information on this specific unit. I know I will apparently need a 3rd channel radio with adjustable endpoints. I saw some post about cheaper radios and modding the Traxas one to get EPA on the 3rd channel. I don't mind doing the mods if it is worth it to get his VR Dig unit functioning properly. I just don't want to spend $300 on the radio just to get a 3rd channel EPA for the dig.

VF was the orginal name for what became DNA. The DNA dig is a good unit, but the original outputs were aluminium, and got chewed up after some driving time was put on the car. Steel replacements became available later. So, I'd say check to see if your outputs are steel, I'd also pull it apart to look inside the case, if the locking dogs in the rear part of case are worn, it might be better to just get a VP dig, or you could try to PM "billet works" on here, maybe he could find some parts for your old unit.

Another option is to lose the dig and build a Sportsman rig, then you could save money and stick with two channels on the radio.

Unfortunately your "hog" is showing it's age.

Some great background info there on the VF dig. You told me more useful information then what I could find on the net.

I knew that buying a used crawler might be a gamble on some of the parts. I won't know untill I actual get the darn thing. I fully intend to do a teardown of the dig/tranny and look for worn or broken parts.
