Default Goin' old school

You guys didn't think I'd leave comp crawlers that easily, did you?

From the day I first saw one, I have been in love with the SSS but never had the opportunity to own one.

But now I do.

Doing some trading with Mudsy scored me DNAs old school version that was mocked up but never ran. It went right from my mailbox to the workbench for some quick assembly.

Most of my crawler stuff is gone now, but I did hang on to some fairly new axles, a set of Axial beadlocks and a set of Cougars. Digging deep, I came up with enough hardware to bolt it all together.

This will be a pretty slow build. I don't expect it to be drivable until sometime this fall. If things to according to plan, this rig will be the test bed for some cool stuff I've got rattling around in my brain. My new mill will be delivered at the end of this week and I plan to get down to business ASAP.

A quick list of parts n stuff to come:

xr steering mod
bullet proof trans
HH Revolver S (when available)
Brushless Hobbies sensored ESC
Aluminum beadlocks (haven't decided which)
OD/UD

On to pictures...rough mockup so don't judge me.

Will we at least get to see stick packs on this truck?

Sure. I'll get Szczczczerba to fab me up a wicked cool cf tray to mount above the transmission.

Nice! Maybe this should be called a "middle aged school" build....

HH Revolver S will snap that truck in half faster than you can even begin to realize what's about to happen.

In a good way.

And get good at making replacement side plates with your mill, no matter what motor you use. Just sayin'... I still have mine together, but I also have a small stack of broken plates.

I'm not gonna lie...breaking it is a concern.

That is pretty much where I thought it would break. Making extras would not be a big deal. Might just do swappable torsion arms instead of whole side plates.

Now that I looked at my plate pile I see I've snapped one under the skid plate screw also. Though/and/but, I never ran those upper braces.

I've decided to get this thing rolling...and as I dug through the remaining ax10 parts I had...came to the realization that its going to be a while. I got nothing left.

So, in the meantime, it'll serve as a testbed/fitment thing for parts I want to develop.

First thing is a d-mount/servo/battery tray for the front axle. Pardon the terribly ugly 1st prototype.

Links mount with the same spacing/height as the Ultralite version when its upside down...

Lots of room for a bta...

I was also thinking about a simple link-mount-only that would mount under the stock servo plate. But I can't find any of the 4 stock servo plates I know I have.

So...thoughts? Suggestions? I may also do a production version of the low COG rear axle battery/electronics tray that I ran on my Fastback.

And of course...gotta pimp the Ultralite...

When the hell Can I line up to get one of those front link mounts? that thing looks killer. One thing I remember with my sss was with the lower links, depending on where exactly you mount them to the axle. whether it's the very inside, in the middle, or on the outside of that link mount will have a lot to do with how soft that suspension will get.

If memory serves me correctly that is my SSS now I think, I still have it and a spare set of plates at home. Still and will always be one of my favourite chassis

Not really sure. There's still quite a bit of refining to do, and then send a few out to my parts testers to beat on. Definitely won't be until after the first of the year.

10-4 on the link position. I've been reading through some of the old SSS threads trying to absorb some knowledge. I'm also trying to come up with an easy fix once the side plates inevitably break.
