Default AX10 No More. Rebuild for 2013 season.

It's early days yet, but I thought I'd start a thread on this project.
I've been trying my hand at designing a chassis with AutoCad .
Heavily influenced by Underground Crawlers Fastback Chassis and the Evil Crawler Designs "The Ringer" chassis for Axial AX10

First version. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ And after some input from Highlucks, and tweaking to fit the motor better, Version 2.

Side by side. And thats my old sportsman all over the table.

The parts list so far.
Ordered and waiting for delivery. (Except the motor, I won that a year ago in a raffle on cAnz. Still haven't used it.)

Holmes Hobbies 35T Handwound
CreationFab Delrin AX10 Tubes =NEW STYLES=
FELSENFEST AX10 spools (locker)
XR-10/Wraith Incision C-Hubs - Black
Wraith Aluminium Steering Knuckles (Black)
Axial Heavy Duty Bevel Gear 36/14T {Overdrive}
M4 Rod Ends with Hollow Balls
Axial XR10 Front Universal Set
Steel Pipe Flanges - 3x4.5x5.5
Traxxas Big Bore Aluminium Shocks
Axial Steel Outdrive Set

Still to come.
Castle 10A BEC
Castle Sidewinder Micro ESC
Mini T Shock Spring Set
VP Incision Servo Armour
Xr-10 Titanium (Ti) Bent Steering Rod

I punched the chassis parts out on a PEGA244 turret punch at work.

.

More updates as the come(could be a little while, this doesn't need to be finished until early next year).

looks good mark,

the spm scene next year is going to be exciting....

i like the look of the first chassis, but won't fancy your chance of recovery. also are the shock fitted between the cab plate and chassis plate? you may want to trim the cab plate as it would hinder your shock movement as it is.

look like you have a habbit of winning lucky draw....

Thanks for the comment guys.
Dave, I like the look of the first one to, but the recovery issue is why the second one has a rounded roof.
I don't have the shocks yet, at the comp next weekend Ill grab them off Cam or Stew.
I think you're right though, there will be a version 3 chassis in the next couple of weeks once I have the shocks.
Or I might try it out without the cab part, and just get a VW body for it.
But I will be starting on the skid plate and maybe the links in the meantime.

Time for an update.
Now with new shorter cab section.
Some of the parts arrived so I've been able to get a little done.

Still waiting on the CreationFab splined tubes, mini-T cups for the shocks and a set of under drive gears for the rear.
But I have made a skid plate and lower links. These were going to be the rear links, but they were to big and got in the way.

So I made them shorter, put them up front and made a new set for the rear.

I picked some 4mm threaded rod yesterday and made some upper links this morning.
Also I got the Dremel out and completed the cap mod on the shocks.
And here is how it sits now.
Full droop.

Half travel.

Full compression.

I really hope this thing goes better than my old, near stock AX10.
I'd hate for all this work to be for nothing.

Thats it for this weekend, waiting on more parts.
Let me know what you think, and any tips or suggestions will be taken onboard. Thanks for looking.

Nice, the chassis looks like BWD Thing.... Should be easy to recover. All looking very good.

Looking at the picture , your front axle rotated forward quit a bit. When you have you creative fab tube, make you you have plenty of castor to counteract that.

Thanks Dave, the only reason I can have the front axle like that is because of the CreationFab tubes.
I may have to reduce it a bit, I fear the steering links will fowl.

More parts have arrived, I'll be busy this weekend.

I've already modified the axle housing for the tubes, but forgot to take a pic.
I'm going to make some new 4 link plates at work tomorrow, then I can get this thing ready for testing.

I managed to knock up a rear 4 link plate, which I'm pretty happy with.
And a front 4 link/servo mount/batterymount, which I need to modify.

And my underdrive gear set turned up from ToadsRC.
That meant I could get the rear diff built and fitted.
I also got the soldering iron out got all that done to.
I wanted to make a wiring harness for my CC Bec.
This is what I came up with.

So this is how it sits at the moment.

I think It's sitting a little high at the moment. Softer springs maybe?

And some flex shots.

I need to make another front mount plate so I can get the steering sorted.
Then I need to stuff all the electronics in there somewhere. Then I can test it out.
I'm already thinking of new side plates, lower for improved shock angle.

Thats it for now, thanks for looking.

Wow.... Bodiless bugs i say it look like..... Well done.

The adapter you made will work but i will use the negative wire to the rx too. Connect it to the bec negative line to avoid floating ground problem that may happen.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to these things. It's my first BEC.
I did research how to wire it, I thought I had it correct.
Are you saying run 2 negatives out of the BEC, 1 to the servo and 1 to the RX?
Or run only 1 negative out of the BEC, going to the RX instead of the servo?

From bec, run 2 black wires to both rx and servo. So the whole radio system has a common ground. That will avoid float ground problem. The adaptor you make will definitely work, I have that in my wraith but all comp rig have common ground.

Thanks Dave, I'll fix that tonight or tomorrow arvo.

On a side note.
I went to fit my MIP drive shafts, but the pins supplied with the under/over drive gears are the wrong thread.
I have odered some Traxxas ones to use, but they will take up to a week to arrive.

I wish I had noticed earlier.

I think mip ax10 drive shaft is m4 thread for the old style flat on the diff pinion. The new ax10 diff pinion shaft is cross pin . That why is the problem. Hhmmmm i may order the traxxas pin as well if it fit. Is cheaper than the mip adaptor.

Ready for testing. Good timing, as this weekend is our States Comp.
As good a time as any for testing. Weighs in at about 2¼kgs without battery.
Heres some pics of how it looks now. Left over head from my Bruiser build.

I'll get some better pictures on the weekend, on the rocks.
Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think.
