Default Spare tire location / removal

I built my bomber cage last night and I can't make up my mind on the spare tire location.

I have the DMG relocation bracket and the DMG exo radiator mount but it seems like a tight fit.
The bracket also squeezes my fuel line.

Can you guys post pics of différents setups?
Stock vs DMG vs JEC Racing vs No spare?

You could flip the rear part of the cage upside down, and attach half of the stock spare mount.

Sorry, no pictures, I ended up taking it apart because I like how it performs without the spare (it does look cool though). Anyways, to do it take the spare mount apart (not the screw that holds the tire on), then take the rear cage apart, flip the rear cage so that the fat side is up (the part that normally is on the bottom), but make sure the counterbored holes still face outward (the holes the spare mount normally fits into) then screw the top half of the spare mount into the top holes on the rear cage, facing inwards.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

I think I will go without the spare for the moment.

It looks naked without but at least you can see the fuel cell / radiator details

It also performs better without the spare.

I made a custom deck lid and removed the spare want to make a body panel for where the spare mount was. Want to paint the fuel cell and it will really pop then.

I like mine a lot better without the spare on, and I feel like it helps it flip over less without that extra weight up so high.

Same, though I wonder what would happen if I took the foam out.

The foam is not much weight and anytime that something hits the spare it's going look flat without the foam

Remove that anchor. There's absolutely no reason for it other than looks. In the real world racers aren't going to drag around spare tires unless they absolutely need them.

Scale vs performance debate. Love it. Thought that only happened in the go fast world.
The problem is the size of the tire. 5-1/2" + tall tires don't scale at either 1/10 or 1/8, which is what the Bomber actually is if you start measuring stuff and comparing it to reality. So, maybe 3d print some fix a flat bottles and have a win/win situation?? (Note sarcasm) Bummer that there aren't many options for a cool looking and performance solution. That deck cover in the pic a couple of posts above^^^^^ looks good, but I'm biased towards bodywork. Makes me like the SCORE tires I'm running that much more by being 3/4" shorter, scaling out to a 39" tire. That is reality. For what its worth, that 39" tire with a Method beadlock weighs about 160 lbs in the real world. Scale that out, maybe leave the spare for the chase rig to carry.

I guess it's why many owners put 1.9 wheels and tires on their bomber?

Yep - to make them more closely resemble the 1:1 Randy Slawson King of the Hammers championship winner...

Are you kidding? If you pay attention to this or any other forum the scale vs performance debate is all over the scaler world. I'd say it's much more prevalent here than it is in the go fast world.

I don't understand your sarcasm though. I didn't say anything incorrect.

I went through this ordeal over several months and numerous other changes to my vehicle. I tried stock, modified (DIY), DMG and finally naked.

Performance with a spare = DMG for the win.
Performance as priority #1 = Naked.

* STOCK *

--------------------

* DIY *
I built this based off an idea from bilinvic. This in essence slid the spare tire up an inch or so making it drag less

--------------------

* DMG *
The DMG mount was much better than the DIY and totally got the tire out of the way from dragging on steep approaches

This one shows just how high it sits when on steep terrain

--------------------

* NAKED *
Eventually performance won me over. I had an SSD Rock Racer rim and Pro-Line Flat Iron tire for matching spare

This combo was pretty heavy and pretty high. Leaving it low drug like an anchor and keeping it high hurt COG. I tested with and without several times on the same technical obstacle and the difference was unmistakable. Probably not a big deal for more than 90% of fun crawling; but, the negative effect on really steep angled techy spots was absolutely noticeable.

So I ended up ditching it altogether

So where is the trade off? Having the weight out back for traction or the high cg lever up there trying to tip you over? Anyone running shorter tires having the same problem? I'm not up and running yet so no dog in the fight. It appears that in most of the pics/videos I've seen that axle clearance isn't the problem, rather keeping the rubber side down. Maybe a 1/8" thick steel skid would solve some of that problem??? Try some mag weights? Seems most everyone gets an hr of run time on a 3s, .60 lb skid. Granted, my build is out in left field to the norm, I will try all kinds of things if needed. Most of the peeps here seem to be weekend warriors rather than competitors anyhow. Amaze your buddies by toting that spare tire and still keep it wheels down.
