Went to my lhs to run indoors and after about 10-15 min of 3s esc cut out and smelled funny motor was hot too, switched to 2s after cooldown ran for a while with no cutout but when I checked motor it was really hot... Brought it up to the shop and they used an infrared thermometer and motor was a bit over 200 degrees... Axial ae5 esc Holmes 21t Trailmaster 550 can

I have run 3s before but only outside and never have noticed any excess heat...

Got home decided to do a teardown got the spur cover off and there is little bits of plastic all over and I can twist the motor even though the mount is tight so I'm guessing my mesh was changing and causing motor to overheat?

Also spur gear seems bent, has a wobble as it spins

That ESC doesn’t handle 3s very well on Bombers. Beit the weight of the rig ornthe speeds achieved or a combo of both.

I burnt up the same ESC on a Titan 550 on 3s and in my Bomber.

Ding ding ding!
You are now ready for a real ESC, the hobbywing 1080!

Enjoy one of the best upgrade for the RTR Bomber.

For your spur problem, maybe the mesh was too tight and overheating the motor while eating away at the spur teeth.

I found a metal spur and it’s a lot louder for sure. But no denying a good, or bad, mesh.

Maybe anecdotal, but I ran strictly 3s in my RTR for a solid 5 months until I smoked the stock motor on a forest floor hillclimb. The AE-5 is still fine.

The 550 Titan shouldn’t get hot if it’s geared right for the job.

For example, it’ll get hot quick in a bomber if you super slow crawl it with stock gearing; especially so in warm weather. For super slow crawling I have a 2 speed and use low ratio.

I could get the stock 35T hot in 10 minutes slow crawling on 3S. A 27T (21T equiv 550) got frying hot in 10 minutes.

With the 1080 HW and a Titan and a 2 speed I have had the same motor and ESC in my truck for over 2 years now. Been through loads of creeks and wet conditions and still goes like a scalded cat considering it’s brushed.

Maybe you had one from a ‘good’ batch.

I've been slow crawling my 550 21T on 3s without any heat at all. It just won't heat up no matter what.
I use the hobbywing 1080 but I did lower my pinion to 11T.

I tweaked the settings a lot , might be a mix of the lower pinion and settings.

The AE-5 is actually only a 40a esc. websites including axial don’t actually list all the specs, it only shows the peak current and breaking current. I did some digging some time ago and you can find the exact same esc from a brand called “xtra speed”, and also fun fact, the new react gen 8 also uses the same exact esc. here is full specs of the esc, and I can confirm that the specs are the same.

Tore down further and top shaft of tranny is bent a little ...

So plan of action I'm thinking upgrade motor mount and cam, replace top shaft and spur gear, switch to 11t pinion and see what it does on 2s? If still gets really hot Hobbywing esc?

For the money involved, I would get the hobbywing 1080 and a holmes Hobbies trailmaster Sport 550 21T.
It's the best quality/price out there and will take 3s easily.
It's what 25$us for the ESC and 20$us for the motor?
You can also adjust many things and really make the truck perform better.

Motor mount and cam is also very very good. The axial aluminium mount is solid and will help dissipate some heat.
