Default FJC's scx-10 build

Well, this is going to be my first scale build.

Not sure what body route i will go with though. I'd love to get an FJ Cruiser body and basically clone my 1:1, but i don't think the wheelbase will work out. So I'm leaning towards a hilux body. Whatever direction i take, it will be a slow one and I'll be taking a bit of time.

-

Took a few hours today to get this thing assembled. I only have two negative thing's to say about this kit: First, the shocks are crap.. They just don't feel smooth and IMO are cheap. Second, a mix of standard and metric hardware.. why?

Other than those two things, i am extremely impressed with this kit.

Electronics: I have two options here but don't really know which way to go with it.. I can either run the waterproof XL-5 with a Novak 55, or Mamba Max and one of those holmeshobbies.com crawlmaster motors. I have both speed controls, but no motors.. decisions decisions.

I have an assortment of 6, 7 cell nimh packs and a 7.4v lipo pack for power.

Currently all i need is to wire in a motor and its good to climb

Took it out for the first time today to a local crawling spot (dimension park for those socal'ers).

Did great except for one issue; Every time the nose pointed a little bit up, it would just roll back with the windshield pointing to the sky, or onto it's lid. So tonight i'll be moving the battery from the back to the front and see if that helps a bit.

A couple pics from today:

stuck

Great pics!

By the way, your 1:1 link in your sig has rcccrawler.com in it too...

That spot looks like a great place to crawl. I'll have to check it out soon.

Did you decide on the FJ cruiser body or still looking for something? Nice pics.

The place is great! I found it a few months back walking my dog and then I learned a bit more about it in the orange county thread in the california sub-forum.

Still deciding on a body... there's a bunch out there!

I moved the battery up front since it i had zero traction up front on any climb and it would just roll back onto it's lid. Then i removed 3 cells from an old stick pack i had and put them in the rear to help with the loss weight. Did much better setup this way! But i think i might still add some lead weights to the front wheels.

That's actually a sticker though! I think i got them from proline a couple years ago. They stick on the inside and you paint over them.

I put an airtronics 94162z steering servo in ($21 after tax at hobby people ). Much stronger than the traxxas servo i had (still only 144 .oz/in). Switched out the cells in back for an old traxxas motor i had.. it's a bit heavier than the 3 cells. Other than that not much progress.. Still trying to decide on a body and possibly will be attempting brazing soon (bumper's or sliders.. dunno yet).

Hobby People's President's sale was great this weekend. I was there Saturday and got a new 55t motor and 4500 6 cell batt for just over $50. I used your idea with the cells in the back. I have 4 and it seems to work really well.

I swear they have a sale every week forcing me to come back

The weight in back is helping me so much! I was at dimension park for a total of 2.5 hours today (went back twice) and it was doing much much better than it has in the days before. The rear is flexing way more.

I also broke my first part today. The very front frame brace split right down the center, then both pieces broke off.

Picked up an FJ Cruiser body today. Not yet mounted, but will be repainted and mounted eventually.

I can get you a side shot tomorrow.

The body has a 10.5" wheelbase, and the SCX-10 has an 11.5" wheelbase. I will be picking up some shorter links tomorrow to hopefully make it fit decently.

Sanded down and painted up the body:

Only thing left to do is shorten the rear links just a tad.

Today i ran it for the first time with 4 oz of lead weight in the left front wheel and the right front wheel... WOW.. What a difference! The tires grip mucho better now thanks to that extra weight. Spots that i just could almost climb before i rolled onto the lid i can now get up and over. I think my setup is finally perfect.

Current set-up:
Battery up front, with cut low profile battery mount posts, 4 oz in each front wheel, reciever and ESC in back right before the axle, and front & rear 4-link.
