Default Rough Rear Axel

Good morning to ya, I am in the process of assembling a scx10 and have run into an issue with assembling the rear axel... it's very rough. After getting it assembled and turning it by hand, I tore it back down and checked to make sure that the pinion gear was fully seated per the instructions, and it is. After re-assembling and re-greasing it still has the same issue, so I compared how far the pinion gear's shaft projected out the front of the axel housing to the front axel, and the 2 are exactly the same (the front axel turns smooth as butter). I found a thread on here that said if the screws at the end of the axel were overtightened it would cause problems. So I completely removed them, but that didn't help either.... Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks!

Is the pinion gear backwards? J/K

That is a tough one that I have not heard before. Both my axles work great. I had the seating problem on one, but now works great. Have you checked the ring gear and made sure that the locker assembly is installed correctly?

If that is good, then I am at a loss for an easy fix and I would call axial.

Talking Gear Mesh

I am pretty sure you need to take axle back apart and seat the pinion gear just alittle more . I had the same problem.
after I seated the pinion the axles smoothed out.

or you could just grab onto the pinion shaft from the out side with a pair of pliers and seat it the rest of the way..

I had the same issue and I did what Yoda said and it immediately fixed it.

I tried the pliers, and even took it apart again and even gently tapped the pinion down with dowell and a deadblow mallet.... still rough. I called Axel, and their first question was this is for the straight rear axel isnt it? I said yes, and their respose was run it for a while and it should smooth right out.....

Looking in Tower the straight axle's come with washers http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXUFG5&P=Z, could these be shims to adjust the gear mesh?

not sure how shims would help your problem. Have you taken the pinion bearing out? Check the housing, maybe the bearing caught the sidewall and there is a bind point that won't let it seat properly.

I finally figured out what the problem was .... The right rear axle was pressing against the bevel gear forcing it into the pinion gear and causing the issue. The left axle had a very slight amount of endplay, where the right side did not. What I did was file the hub on the back of the diff gear down maybe 2-3 thousands of an inch to allow for just a little end play for it to move freely and it spins smooth as butter now.

I have the exact same issue on mine as well. You can really feel it when turning by hand but when it's all together and the driveshafts are hooked up to the tranny, you dont feel it at all. I simply left it figuring it will break in with use.

Some variation in kits maybe,,Mine came out super smooth
from the get go. I set it on the smooth garage floor all RTR
batt and all ,,,removed pinion and pushed it,,Daang that !!
It rolled almost as good as some of my old touring car club racers.

Did I forget to say that this SCX10 kit was the sweetest build
ever !
