Default LEAF Springs on an Axial SCX-10 frame

Hey Guys, I've seen quite a few threads on here asking if you can run leaf springs on the Axial SCX-10 chassis.. The answer is YES you can..

I wanted to use the SCX's scale frame for a custom project I'm building, ( which will be un-veiled later on..) and I also wanted to run leaf springs so the first thing I did was pick the axle combo I wanted to run, which was a set of RC4WD's "Ultimate Scale" Toyota axles. The next thing I tracked down was a complete leaf spring, and shackle set from a Tamiya "Hi-lift" truck. After ALOT of careful measuring I knew it was time to modify the frame, and center sections..

The stock frame set-up will NOT work with leaf springs right out of the box.. I needed to ( VERY carefully) BEND in both front and rear ends of the stock chassis, basically flattening out the ares where the spring shackles were going to mount to.. This step is VERY important that each frame rail is bent back to straight ( square) once your all done bending both sides.. If one side is bend even the slightest bit off, it will throw off the entire geometry of the frame, and the truck won't run "true" so to speak. I also had to grind down 1/16" from EACH SIDE of all the plastic stock axial cross pieces, and stock tranny mount/skid to get the correct width for the RC4WD axles. Next step was figuring where I wanted to mount the shackles to the frame. Once its all measured out ( and WB has been decided on) I simply marked the holes on the chassis and drilled them out, then installed the shackles, leafs, and axles.

This overall process is pretty time consuming, and must be done correctly for it to work right, but the end results speak for themselves - ( same application applies to a number of other axles you might want to use)

Heres compared to stock -

And heres an above view.. Notice how much narrower the front and rear is on the leaf spring frame compared to the stock set-up above it. Here you can also see I made the WB the EXACT same as stock.

Thanks Man In reality its not all THAT hard to pull this off, Its just the measuring and frame bending thats time consuming..

If you brought all the rails together, why not simply narrow the centersection instead of bringing the rails in?? Sounds like a fun job for a bodyman!

I actually DID narrow ALL the centersections, but you also have to physically bend in the frame ends in 2 spots on both the front and rear for the leaf springs to mount "square" alongside the framerails. If you just narrowed the centers, and left the rest of the frame stock the leafs wouldn't work very well, they'd bind up ( plus it would just look like crap as well).

Once the springs break in, it should flex ok, but its pretty stiff for now. ( The leafs I'm using are brand new and aren't broken in yet)
