Question make scx perform @high speeds

hi

i just finished my scx with f350 (maybe you've seen the thread) - and now work is done, so i start the next project(s).

one of them is to buy a whole new rig - ax10 for crawling only.

but the scx should be converted into something fast and fun driving with. i installed a 27t engine (2s only as my rooster can not handle more), with a bigger pinion.

now the scx wheelies on concrete ground (or on the carpet of course) but because of the diff lock, flips in fast corners. i'd like to go full speed probably power drifting around corners.

what is needed to achieve this? my thoughts:

.) open front diff
.) let the clutch slip a bit (could burn through because of that)
.) shorten shocks
.) use stiffer springs in the shocks
.) lower cg by raising top mount of the shocks (would lead to almost zero travel)

any other ideas? or any ideas which of the above actions would help, and which will not be that good.

regards izeman

ps. what are the best term to search for in the forum to find other similar threads. i'm not really familiar with all those terms like basher, racer .. as i'm not a native english speaker. thanks!

If you are looking for a diff on your scx10 and to lock your ax10 then you are in luck, they are the same axles and you can just swap them out, or swap the gears themselves. Other than that you are on the right track. Lower center of gravity and changing the shocks will help a lot. Might want to look into 1.55s instead of 1.9s, see if those would perform better. I think the 1.9s would have a lot of sidewall flex that you wouldn't want in an on road racer/basher.

The open front diff would probly be best for your application. Or you could slow down for the corners. You will eventualy be fighting the high center of gravity no matter what you do.

The front is more important than the rear, but my thought was since you want an ax10 anyhow, you will want to lock both of those diffs so i would save some cash and unlock both on the scx10. only time this would be a problem is if you do more than driving in the grass with your scx you might get the 2 spinning wheel issue that other trucks have. If you are going stricktly onroad then both open wouldn't be a problem at all

Especially since the SCX-10 has a high center of gravity.

what comment are you acklowledging?

is it that,
a) i should install stabilizer bars or
b) that it will be nicely drifting

i'll try to open both diffs and see.
so i can exchange axles COMPLETELY between the two of them? i didn't start building the ax10 yet.

slowing down while cornering is for girls ;)
i think that high cg is a big problem, but shorting the shocks reduces travel very much. leveling the top mount is not that easy either because i have to level the body as well.

If you wanna drift you can wrap your tires in black electrical tape.
Also convert to a VXL brushless kitt you can find them for $115.

Yes, they are the exact same axles in both kits.

This might be a stupid question, but why do you want to drive this truck fast on road? I'd like to see what you end up building though.

i couldn't explain it better ;) i'm more the handcrafting guy than the driver guy. as soon as the rig was finished i started thing how to improve it. or build something completly different out of it.

street racing is NOT the intended use. i like to drive it in my backward (grass), and maybe something you could call a dirt track (in the surrounding woods). of course on the way to the woods there is asphalt as well. so i could call it an all terrain vehicle ;)

hhhmmm. i searched the forum for "scx stabilizer" and could only find this single thread. any ideas? i have NO idea how to install those. do you mean something like a panhard bar? but that is for stoping moving the chassis side to side.

well bud you aint the only one out there wanting a fast scx10 i got a velineon system in mine with a 36 tooth pinion and 69 tooth spur , plan and simple for these truck you need sway bars there aint anything else out there gonna work, even look at the videos where guys are building scale trophy trucks with live axles in the rear they are unstable when they do full power launches and cornering , im getting custom shock towers built for mine right now but when they come back im gonna be on a sway bar system:-P
