Default Stock TR ESC overheating

I've been having this problem lately. The only aftermarket items I have on my SCX10 TR is a HiTec 645mg servo and a Spektrum SR3000 receiver.

I run my truck for about 5 to 10 minutes and when I feel the top of the heatsink and ESC itself, they're extremely hot! I'm using a 7 cell 5100 mah nimh battery.

I'm using a 6C 3800 on mine with no problems. Try a 6C and see if it still gets too hot.

What is the ESC designed to handle?? On Axial's website it says the TR requires a 7.2volt (6cell) pack. If it can take a 7cell (8.4V) pack it will usually say so. That goes for all manufacturers. Check your owner manual, but I'm guessing that the stock ESc is only designed to take 7.2 volts, not the 8.4V you are putting through it. IF it can take 8.4v, then I would say there is a problem with the ESC.

Do you have a temp gun to measure how hot it actually is?

I would say it is an issue with the esc. I have to TR's and I run one with a 6cell nihm and the other a 3cell lipo and they both run about the same temp.

Input voltage etc.

i had kinda the same question, the esc on towerhobbies says that it can handle 7-10 cells so IMO it should be able to handle 7.2v 8.4v 9.6v without a problem but i never got a good answer in my post, think your best bet may be to call axail themselves and ask..

link to esc on tower.

I had the same trouble from my TR's esc., you could literally smell it if there wasn't much wind blowing or if you were running it inside. Replaced it with the Traxxas XL-5 waterproof esc, haven't had a problem yet. Everything else is bone stock, running a 6-cell.

Good luck
