Default SCX / HiLux / Honcho flatbed on 1.9's

I sold my X Trail Hilux last spring to go racing, kinda missed it.
Since racing has wrapped up I needed something to make a mess of on my workbench.
Picked up a great deal on an SCX10 chassis tranny and axles.

Picked up the Honcho bed plastics from team3six and was just going to run Flat Irons, becasue I actually think they work pretty good where we crawl.
Found a Hilux cab with Reight back complete with grill from another friends sell of and snatched it up.
Mocked up

The body had alot of paint on it that I wanted gone before I added anymore. I used uretahne bumper stripper. Kind of messy.

Sanded out the rest of the big stuff.

After a couple coats of filler primer and wet sand.

I forgot to take pics all last week
But I picked up a set of my favorite wheels, the old OEM steelies.
They don't work too well on Flat Irons, and these tires looked good online so I bought a set of RC4WD's TSL Boggers.
They're really tall An inch taller than the Flat Irons.

Spent Friday night and most of Saturday putting on the Hand Bros CMS, had some link length issues that kicked my ass.

Coming up with a way to mount the cab without having posts come through the top was a challenge. I bent some 1/2" by 1/8" aluminum up and used a patch of HD velcro under the hood.
Made another hoop with posts coming out horizontal that come through the back of the cab under the window.

Mounted the honch bed and battery tray. I liked the look of removing some of the cage work to keep it simpler.
Shot some sealer on the body and some green
I'll weather the body some later.

Still have to finish the bed and stuff the electronics in a toolbox and mount it as well.

Thanks fellas!
I have a 55T Novak and Rooster Crawler that I was planning on using, but I also was considering putting my Havoc Sport with a 13.5 brushless in as well. Thoughts on that?
I really like the low end grunt and killer drag brake the 55/Rooster offers but the 13.5 geared low might be fun with more wheels speed. Running 2S 20C 5000 Mah Lipos.

They're made by RC4WD and you can get them there or RPP Hobby
About $45 a set.

Is that a Testors green? I think I have the exact same shade but in the small bottles for my static models.

How Bromantic LOL. It's all part of the unwinding that a cold beer and tinkering on the R/C's offers.

It's ACE Hardware cheap-ass "NOW" brand paint, called Hunters Green. It's a little darker than it looks in the pics.

I like the boggers on there. Look badass. That height makes the hilux look monsterous, I love it.

I did get a little work done tonight.
Wasn't happy with the front body mount, and I really don't know why I didn't just do it this way to begin with. I just used the body mount post holes that are on the shock hoops. I reamed them out a bit and have these nylon spacers that I got from ACE Hardware, they fit right down in the reamed hole. Cut and drilled another piece of 1/8" aluminum with HD velcro on top. Alot simpler and cleaner looking.

Used some .080 Styrene and started on the bed. I'll use this as the base and have the thin Diamond Plate to go over it so it's not just blah flat.

I was going to use one of those Tractor Supply Gift Box/Toolbox things to hold the ESC and RX but they don't have them at the store near me. Then I got to looking at the plastic box my Ipod came in. It's almost perfect.
Reamed a hole in it to pass all the wires through using a rubber grommet, and I will eventually silicon it up and make it as water-tight as I can get it.
Had to ream a hole in the bed to make room for the grommet i the electronics box so it sits flush.

I think I want it to look like a Knaack box. Might even go as far as having a decal made for it.

So I scuffed the plastic with Scothbrite, and shot a coat of Bulldog Adhesion Promoter on it.

Red oxide primer so that it'll be under the brown when I weather it.

And some brown

It's going to be a PITA to get the battery in and out from under the bed so I may suck it up and buy a smaller LiPo that I can mount up front.
Thanks for all the compliments so far!

Caught a second wind late last night and worked on the bed some more. Got the diamond plate bonded to the styrene bed panel.
I painted it silver, the sprayed Pactra window tint paint on it, while that was wet i brushed over it with scotchbrite pad so streak and knock the black off the raised diamond patter. Came out nice, looks like plate that was black but now is worn down.
Also weathered up the toolbox with 1500 grit and some over reduced black airbrushed in to grunge it up. Not sure how much I like it, looks almost more like a wooden chest than a beat up steel box.

Had picked up these little threaded rings and used a couple at the corners along with tiny screws to mount the bed plate to the cage. Came across a Warn decal to slap on the box.

Went over the green with some 1000 grit and 1500 grit wet to dull it up and reveal some of the black primer to age to cab.

Finished up my wiring and actually got to drive over the couch a little

Still have a 3Racing winch to mount and some other little things to finish up.
