| Stock honcho questions
A friend of mine just got the new honcho. So far its completely stock with 110 milimeter shocks and 2.2 swampers. We were just running it in the house slowly and after 5 or 10 minutes you could smell the motor and it felt pretty hot. Anyways what type pinion do these use and what is the stock pinion size? And also i think since this is just a trail running truck and not alot of crawling that a traxxas xl5 with a titan 12t would be a good choice since he wants it a lil faster. What gearing with this combo? And will a 2075 servo fit with no mods and will the 12t fit with no mods? Sorry for all the Qs

I picked my new Honcho Thursday, took it home that night and cut the travel limiters off of the shocks. I went back to Get A Hobby in Nevada City to play on the rock piles and courses. It was packed! Within a couple of minutes of crawling I saw a little smoke picked up the truck and found the motor was hot also, with the stock tires 1.9 Shop owner pointed out to me the pinion gear is way to tall for the crawling I wanted to do. I bought and installed in a matter of minutes a new 13t-48. The truck now is incredible, I was crawling over some of the courses meant for the unlimited rigs. When you try even larger tires than the 1.9, if your wanting to crawl, change the motor pinion, go low, go slow.. Awesome truck! I can't wait to get back up to the shop to play on the rock courses! | Re: Stock honcho questions Funny you should mention that. I'm new to crawling, but not RC and a 20t pinion/87t spur seemed a bit high to me for a crawler.

Just a thought, the 2.2s really shouldn't tax the drivetrain enough to start overheating anything. Creeping along and trying to climb stuff can do that though. I'd check for binding at the gear mesh and driveshafts. Also, driving around on carpet is hard on the driveline because there isn't any differential action allowing different turning rates side to side. I'm running a 87/14t combo in mine, but I'm powered by a Velineon brushless setup. I think you'd be safe dropping the pinion a few teeth will help, also maybe try bumping the spur up a few teeth wouldn't hurt. Be careful with the 2075 servo, they're nice cause they are WP but remember they have plastic gears. |

Thanks so much for the comments guys how does the 12t do at slower speeds? And will the driveline hold up to it?

There is lots of motors. If you want a traxxas motor try this. Traxxas Titan 550 Size Motor (21T) - TRA3975 It will be slower but have more torque. Are you running a 3 cell lipo? |

i had the same issue with the motor smelling, turned out that the stock WB8 drive shafts didnt have enough angle in them and they were binding, try picking the truck up and slowly give it throttle and see if you can tell if the drivetrain jumps or jutters or if its smooth or anything else, if it isnt 100% smooth you have a binding issue in the drivetrain, weather it be your pinion/spur mesh or your axles assembly or driveshafts hope this helps! |
