Dual Dingo build thread-My first build thread This is officially my first ever build thread. I've been on here reading and studying a lot. I'm open to any input you might have. Dual Dingos, Will be using FUTABA 4PL RADIO back up is 3PL I would also like to say, KC HOBBY, Archdale North Carolina is a great store. They beat just about everybody's online prices. They are very friendly and helpful. *** UPDATE *** I've decided to make grill and lamp bezels for both rigs. Bought a bunch of 5mm LED's to install. Also decided to make wheel/fender wells out of styrene for both rigs. First build 1.9 flat irons Axial 1.9 chrome beadlocks 35t RC4WD motor Tekin fxr Hitec servo 5995 robot servo Castle BEC set at 6v Robinson racing gears in tranny Axial alum CHUBS and KNUCKLES Axial driveshaft rings Cotter key shackles (found here forgot whose idea) Stick batteries 1800 nihms 2 ea Second build 1.9 flat irons Axial 1.9 black beadlocks 35t RC4WD motor Tekin fxr Hitec servo 5645 Castle BEC set at 6v Robinson racing gears in tranny Axial driveshaft rings Cotter key shackles (found here forgot whose idea) Stick batteries 1800 nihms 2 ea This build will have wheel wells and fancy wiring Here's first pic to start off the dual build http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/d9e05d60.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. Took me two or three evenings to build the axles. I should say, I have arthritis and some thumb pain which slows me down. I first installed Axials servo arm because I didn't want to drill out the alum one that came with the servo. I later found out it was a terrible fit. Screw wouldn't stay tight when testing. Also was not a tight fit. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/626fc48d.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Here's the rear axle. I started out with the three link set up. I've installed Axial rings and found that the one near the spur gear cover rubs real bad. I later change to stock rings at the tranny connections. I really don't think they were needed up there. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/39294abe.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Are you building the two for different purposes or will they be twins? |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Cool! Glad to see you started a build thread. I am looking forward to watching your progress. OH, and I think it was BubbaEinstein's post were you saw the shackle idea. I just read a post you put up in one of his threads "thumbsup" |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Here's a shot os the Aluminum Chubs and knuckles. I found out the hard way that these Axial parts do not come with screws to mount these. I had to order some screws which I got from Tony's screws. He really has good prices. If you run across this I had to order 3 mm x 10 mm metric hex button head. I haven't waterproofed yet. You can see there are two holes on the axle body that needs to be plugged if you stay with the three link set up. I'll be switching to 4 link after running it some. I want to see the differene. I didn't pack the axles, but I did use marine grease. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/5105eed7.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I first installed the oversize Axail rings and found the one near tranny is too large and rubs the spur gear cover. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/abb979c1.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Dingo Body mount: I did a lot research on body mounting and I found people didn't like body showing on top of the body in the front. The rear clips where a pain to use. Velcro mounting didn't seem to hold well in roll overs. I've seen rock crawlers where the body mounts are on the side of the body's. My batteries will be the rails. I have new Tamiya hummer that I've been modifying and saw someone on here that mounted the body mounts out back. Got me thinking of how I could do this. This was first attempt. I found the 90 degree mounts on the parts trees. I ran the screws through the bumper posts. I liked the looks but found that they moved to easily so I added wire to keep straight. I've been advised to add strength around the mounts on the body so it doesn't tear. Will be doing. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02427.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02428.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02429.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02437.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I like the way you had mount the body.. |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Lookin' good so far. I like your detailed pics. |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! This is my second revision on the front body mount. I used some light weight aluminum sheet. This allowed me two use two screws to keep body from moving. It also has the clips vertical which I liked because it's easier to put in or remove. The Sheetmetal works but I didn't have away to put in the proper bend. I don't like the rounded corners. I'm going to see if I can make them out of styrene. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/c7b0735b.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/d63d75fc.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/8485a23b.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! For both Dingos I've mounted the batteries on the rock rails. I drilled and counter sunk new holes to line up with the rail screws location. I bought extra Axial battery trays to do this. I used the no slip pad for tool chest drawers. I only use one strap with the pad and nothing moves. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...e352ee30fd.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...2abe08e80e.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...c9bfb5ab46.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...33f8fc6cd7.jpg |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Gonna have to use that body mount technique in the future...great idea"thumbsup" |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Very good improvment on the mounting, its now strong to hold the body.. I like it. Thanks for the idea. |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! The electronics are being mounted in the rear between shock towers. I'm using plastic box that futaba receivers came in. Perfect fit and big enough for ESC and receiver. I've added a servo extension cord from receiver to outside of box. Once sealed up I can still remove truck. I want the box to be removable because I have a Tamiya Clod Buster and Hummer that I can move the electronics box to. Since the 4pl and 3pl have model memory it works great and saved me some money for now. The wire was to keep shock towers pinched against the box. I need to make a brace to fit there instead of wire. I found a left over parts tree that will work for this. I'll being making soon and will post. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...f7d2486dff.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...89d0df6bf2.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02423.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02422.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! You can see I've been running this Dingo for a couple weeks now. That's why the NC red dirt. I found that I don't ever use the switch on the ESC. No need to cut off, but I will put it in the box. I'm thinking of painting the bottom half of the box black and leaving the lid clear. |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! How come there are no pictures of the whole rig with the body on? |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I mentioned earlier that I left the front 3 linked. I saw posts on here about needing a 7 mm spacer to change driveline angle. When I added it I found the servo hit the fame braces. Has any had this happen? It also changed the geometry of the steering. My aluminum chubs are clock able, but that didn't help. Steering looked like it was digging in. I do plan on 4 linking with the parts from the kit and I'm wondering if the same will happen. |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I've add some pics that are on page one. Couple of how I mounted the battery trays and a couple on the electronics. I think that covers this build. I didnt take pics of the painting process. Here is some finished pics of my "DINGO PIRATES" http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...s/e6013d8a.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...DSC02388-1.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...s/3254a76d.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Lookin good man "thumbsup" but I thought you said this was a dual dingo build? |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! THIS IS BUILD TWO. Due the the lack of funds didn't install aluminum Chubs and knuckles. Will do later. I needed to find easier power connectors because the old style Deans plugs were hard for me get apart. I researched and found these Anderson Powerpole & SB Multipole Series Sets: Bags of housings and contacts in different sizes. Seem to be popular with RC Helicopter pilots. Best price I found was eBay. I'm using the 30 amp connector.i want to conceal wiring so I bought some 1/4" split wire loom to conceal them. I did want to mention, the Anderson power poles can be assembled in different configuration. The motor connectors were assembled so they will connect to the batteries. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...12d2f5f372.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...b5c5578d83.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...cf916c42da.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...335ca017a7.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...9afcf88fc5.jpg |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I haven't finished the ESC and receiver box yet. But I did start the fender wells or wheel wells. I saw this here http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...mething-2.html and I really inspired me to try and make my own. I found this video on working with Styrene YouTube - Tutorial: The Basics of Working With Styrene. I found this very helpful. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...760909bfc8.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! When building these I didn't have fenders flares on. Tire clearance looked good and I new they were high enough for the flares to cover the up. What I forgot was the backing to the fender flares were almost 1/4" thick. I spaced the flares from the body 1/8" so they wouldn't rub. So I was off 1/8" on the wells and they weren't high enough to clear the flare backing. You can see in the pics I had to trim 1/8" off. I had these all glued and mounted. Styrene is so easy to work with. Marked off the 1/8", scored, snipped the corners and snapped it off with pliers. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4dde8919a3.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...9c437b5a1e.jpg |

Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I found the body mount design I'm using is off in the front. They have the front of the body about a 1/4" to low. I first noticed the body was not level with Rock rails. You can see this in the pic sort of. It's noticeable looking at the wheels and fender flares. By rasing the mounts up in the front might also let me raise the front bumper like I found in the Hints, tips and tricks section. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...DSC02389-1.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! In this picture you can see I added a couple hex nuts to raise the body post up about 1/4" to level out body. When I make the new mounting plate I might have room to raise front bumper. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02530.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02524.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! cool man! I always suggest to raise the bumper. it hits the rocks less, and it looks better "thumbsup" |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! Something I have not decided on, is the color of the next Dingo. I did paint the red Dingo on the outside of the body. I bought Bright Yellow but I'm not sure yet. I might paint the inside of #2 and do two tone with black. What do you guys think or recommend? http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02533.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02535.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...4/DSC02538.jpg |
Re: Dual Dingos build thread. First build thread! I went to XT60 plugs because of some of the same hand issues you mentioned. Traxxas plugs were pretty okay on my old AX10 also. I had the same issue with spacing my front three link. Ended up with worn servo cables on two seperate servos. I installed a CMS and feel much better about it now. |
