Default Winch choice

Ok guys for a SCX 1.9 comp scaler would you choose a bumper winch or a servo winch, and why? I already have a jervine cms battery plate with a servo winch cutout, and hand bros. Cms.

I think if you are going to use it really hard and heavy, the only choice would be a servo winch. For moderate use I have been really happy with my RC4WD Bulldog winch. It pulls way beyond their stated specs of 4 pounds max, and is pretty impressive. It will pick my 7.5 pound truck right up off the ground.

I have a RC4WD wireless winch on the Rubicon and a 3Racing winch on the Honcho wired to a RC4WD wireless unit. I find they work equally well. The 3Racing is a little more compact.

I've run a couple different winch's and a good servo winch is the way to go!

For scale realism the 3Racing and Bulldog are perfect for what they do.

The bulldog I have on my JK is more than enough for my needs: Holds the line strong when in the stopped position, dead lifts the truck up a rock face, pulls my buddies out of bad situations, works perfect for recovery operations, looks great on the front (scalism)

But for any comp type purposes or wanting to rip your bumper off go with a servo winch. Nonono there not that strong but a servo winch will be more useful in the long run.

Maybe "useful" isn't the word but I'll explain anyways

Being able to route the cable around the chassis through fairleads is one, it can be easier with a servo winch since you would mount it inboard. But then again quicksand servo winches fit on the bumper.

The pulling power/ speed can be more useful. Bulldogs 9300xt and 3 racings are pretty slow for my attention span (I end up throttling to speed things up). But those 2 do everything I need it to.

OK, I can sure understand the cable extension and retraction speed thing you're speaking of. I wasn't aware that a servo winch would extend and retract faster. Not that I would need the speed of a servo winch for what I do. Thanks for the explanation.

3 racing winch on a 9v battery is working great for my 5.5 lbs rig. I think I might double up batteries for 1900mah instead of 950man.

I guy on the forum just release a winch called the K2. its a full servo winch that I saw deadlift a floor jack. that about 25 lb. the most cool thing about it though was it could free spool. put a little pin in on the side and bam you line is out. Its also fast. the line speed was impressive. no while all these fetures aren't needed, in a comp they would be awesome. All the power you'd ever need, fast line retraction, and the ability to just pull the line out, no waiting for the winch to let the line out. I am going to get one.

KMS Winches K2 freespool

Either servo winch with a decent controller/esc for a winch controller or a bolt-on with free spool, there are no other choices IMO. Quicksand, CLAW or the KMS....

Hello,
Should the cable on a 3racing winch go over or under the drum?
Hope this is the right place to ask this.
Thanks in advance

Run the servo winch under the hood and put a 3Racing winch on the bumper with the line running through it. Looks real and performs awesome.

It doesn't really matter, but mine runs under the drum.
