Default what's your shock length and brand preferences

Im in the market for a new set of shocks for my next scx project. I am familiar with the gmade 103mm piggyback shocks. I have them on my wraith and they work great. I was looking at the gmade transition, aeration, and diaphragm shocks. I couldn't make my mind up on any of them or on length so I figured I would start a good shock debate on here.

So I want any and all opinions on what shocks you guys run. Lengths oil weights and all. Show me some pics of em in action. Ive got a week or so before i order any so maybe this thread will take off.

I really like the stock shocks with about 5 drops of oil to lubricate the o-rings. They are smooth and work great for me. I've never felt the need to spend money on shocks. Way better off spending it in other areas.

Do the 94mm give you sufficient flex. I wasnt sure what length would give me good articulation but nothing crazy

Traxxas aluminum big bores, 30 weight oil ,team associated green springs. For me this combo gives me a sure footed feel on the rocks and side hill. Hope this helps

I have the Icon's on my G6 rig and it works the best so far

i have the Losi 4" on my Rubicon and it was ok lots of articulation

i also have the proline on my Honcho, they are ok but for the $$$ not worth it

I'm running AX10 Scorpion shocks on mine still as that's what it originally was.

I run the inexpensive Traxxas ( T/E Maxx ) 100mm big bores.
They can be found/purchased for $ 25. for four

I feel they work purdy good.
rebuilding is simple...
and Traxxas BB re-seal kits are inexpensive as well.

Mine are the original plastic bodied CO's
But they are also available in alloy if one wants that. ( mo' $ )

I run the Losi white coil springs (2.75") on mine.

^ there is also a grey 2.75" C spring that Losi offers.
and it is rated lighter ( 1.6lb ) then their white C spring.
part # is likely... 5146

I use the Traxxas cheapo snap in pre-load shims
on mine where needed.

Both upper and lower spring seats
fit fine with the Losi coil spring diameter.

I maintain my suspension ride height setting somewhat squat
50/50 up/down travel.

The 2.75" Losi coil springs
have always remained positioned in both their upper and lower seats.

Gravity and time are not consumable friendly...
So... to insure my springs do not settle prematurely...
I always store my rig on a chassis supported stand.

I ran a stock axial shock body with a traxxas rod, slightly longer than axials, and thicker, so the stock rings don't ever leak. then you just use whatever you want on the ball end, I have used a fairly long traxxas one most of the time giving the amount of lift I wanted. also used various spring setups as weight increased over time till I was at around 9lbs ending on some stiff springs. yellow short/blue long. I ran a 15w shock oil as well.

I tried to run the traxxas shocks in the beginning and I felt they were a step back. sure they lifted the truck, but the performance was sup par from a fully stock axial shock, even a wraith shock Imo was better.

huh ? which Traxxas shocks ?

IMO... the Traxxas Big Bores or even the Ultra's
are miles ahead of the stock axial junk.

I'm curious if any bind or added friction could be occuring
if you are using over sized traxxas shaft diameter in the stock CO's ?

I say... because...

with my 100mm T-Maxx BB's
if the lower cap (retaining the O-ring seals) is overly tightened...
it can create some added friction/bind by overly squashing the O-rings
and that friction can bind the CO's shaft somewhat...
and reduce the suspension's articulation.

I run 20wt, 3 hole piston in my BB's
they articulate very well IMO.

I have 8 unused Axial shocks laying in muh junk box...
and I feel they are sub par.

wish someone would offer to buy them from me. Lol

^ would sell cheap !

Just like taco crawler, I'm running the tmaxx bigbore aluminum shocks with the grey Losi springs. So far so good, I will probably hafta go to a stiffer spring as the rig gets more stuff. Here is how they sit at ride height with no preloads installed

I run 4" duratrax big bores with the softest spring they make which is the white spring. I have no clue what shock oil I'm running, it was in the shocks when I got them and I just left them. I think it has pretty good articulation.

taco, shoot man I would buy a set from you for cheap... pm me

the traxxas ones were off a stampede I think. the dual rate springs are something I really like, ive got a set of each spring so that may be why I like em so much, I can tune it perfectly for my old rig. r.i.p.

posed static articulation
does not equate to the chassis's articulation as it rolls.

...there are other forces involved...

momentum, gravity, weight/COG are a few.
Could even be a strong head wind present !? Lol

----------------------------

IMO... a slowed/delayed shock damper response
is not advantages to crawling at slow speeds.

that said... a crawler's shock fluid should slow the chassis somewhat
but should not be so stiff... that it mimics a toy's movement.

ya'll know what that looks like... as it bounces along the trail

Got all g-made shocks here, 104mm zero shocks on my scx10, and g-transition on my wraith, the g-transition are good for brushed setups as the dampening is ehh, good for crawling, and great flex, the 90mm are actually 107mm fully extended. The zero shocks are really nice imo, still testing with them but so far working nice, they lift the truck a little with slight bind but working the springs to be a little softer, got upper spring retainer up all the way.
