Do you have any pictures with such a big pack fitted into a scx10?

I have made my own batteries and exclusively drive with them. I prefer LiFePo4 because they are safer and have more even power over the discharge of the battery, better than LiPo. They also have 2000 DoD (Depth of Discharge) cycles to 80%, LiPo is about 200-300. Also a 3S LiFePo4 is about 2.5v higher nominal voltage than 2S LiPo, it sits between 2S and 3S LiPo giving a nice middle ground. Other advantages... more resistance to over/under charging and they like to be fully charged and left alone!

That being said I have found all brands LIE about C rating because people want a "betterrerrer" battery.

C is a multiplier of capacity. If you have a 5,000mah battery with 20 C it will discharge at 100 amps. A 2,500 mah at the same C rating will discharge at 50 amps. This is *CONSTANT* discharge. Peak discharge which lasts about 10 seconds is much more important when crawling and is about 2x of the batteries standard C rating.

To put it another way, a battery discharged at 30C will have a 2 minute life time. Discharge at 1C = 60 minutes, 2C = 30 minutes, ..., 30C = 2 minutes, ..., 60C = 1 minute, ..., 120C = 30 seconds. The math is 60(minutes)/C no matter the capacity.

In practical terms if you have a 30 minute drive time on a battery you have an average discharge of 2C. If you are driving a 5,000mah battery then you have an average discharge of 10 amps (10,000 ma)

People have complained about the "punchiness" of a battery with a lower C rating. However their ESC can only handle 50 amps, for example, and the battery is more than capable of exceeding that. We are humans and are subjective. Many experiments have been done about this and we perceive better performance with a "better number."

If you really want to compare the quality and capability of batteries get the internal resistance from the manufacturer. The lower the better and that is the REAL measure of quality for a lithium based battery and is verifiable. Feel free to read about it here Battery Testing, Test Methods and Procedures

In summary if you have a 50amp ESC and a 5,000mah battery you can't use more than 10C.

Since I mostly bash with my SCX10, I bought two 5000mAh NiMH batteries and use Deans plugs. I've been using them on and off for about two years with no issues.

Just this week, I picked up my first LiPo battery... a 2S 5000mAh 25C battery from Venom with Deans plugs. I've charged the battery, but haven't used it yet. I'm not expecting to be much of a difference, but I will find out.

dual 5200mah LiPo's will be bulky and heavy IMO

I use dual 2200mah 3S LiPo's
wired/plugged parallel.
So combined... 4400mah

^ they weigh less...
and fit better when mounted on the sliders. JMO

run time nets around 3 + hours per charge.
but run time will be dependent of motor wind and gearing.

mounted to factory original sliders

mounted to custom built sliders

^ both utilize similar mounting methods.
And utilize lexan saddles mounted atop the sliders.
Very easy to make yourself.

.................warning....................

don't mount a LiPo battery directly to a metal slider surface...

If shifting causes any abrasion to a LiPo battery...
It could cause a fire and burn/melt your chassis/components.

Thanks for all the replies and links.
Last question:
Can a traxxas xl5 esc handle/capable of being powered by a 2s lipo, or should I stick with nimh with that setup?

it's switchable to LiPo

did you read the owners manual ?

https://traxxas.com/sites/default/fi...LVD%20Addm.pdf

^ switching is necessary
so that the ESC's mode includes a LiPo low voltage cut off.

edit:

I don't think that esc would be ideal for a crawler...
as I'm not reading where it mentioned that it has "drag brake" capabilities !?

https://traxxas.com/products/parts/e...5waterprooflvd

seems like it'd work swell for faster RC cars

Fits with fore/aft room to spare. It's pretty much post-to-post in width but still fits. As far as height goes, the grill is pretty close to the front bumper and I sometimes get wheel rub on the fenders with certain articulations.

I'm thinking of raising them up one hole. Currently 4 holes showing above hoops in front / 1 in rear.

Here you go....
