| Gear teeth stripped in front axle..?
How common is it on a stock rig? I've had it for a week and i'm assuming I sheared something in the front end. It was making a weird noise, pulled the front shaft and spun the pinion by hand and in a certain spot... maybe 6 teeth in the rotation you can kind of get the pinion to skip over and it's really loose. Haven't taken it apart yet to see all the damage. SO.... Stock replacement gears? HD gear set from axial? Other options? Not trying to build a $400 currie right now. |

Get the HD gears, they'll last much longer and take a lot more abuse. You may need to replace the pinion bearings as well, they've been known to fail. Just check everything in the axle before buying/ordering.

have you physically verified that the differential gears have failed ? I never stripped the stock cast ring/pinion gear yet... while running on 3s. You running 6s ? I did strip 3 plastic idler gears in the tranny tho' but I now run metal gears in that... and have had no more issues. Realize that the WB8 drive shaft's pinion coupler seats against the output bearing when pinned in place... and this helps pull the pinion gear outward slightly offering a proper mesh. Possibly your drive shafts are not the originals ? and not aligning the pinion/ring gear such as the WB8's would ? You could shim the pinion gear slightly (thin washer shims) to tighten the mesh at the pinion/ring gears. But not too tight... or it will create more heat, wear faster... and possibly cause drive line bind. Last edited by TacoCrawler; 08-30-2015 at 09:12 PM. |

Aren't the stock ring and pinion aluminum? I know at least the ring gear is.

This thing is bone stock... i've had it for a week. Local hobby shop had the Axial HD gear set, and a couple bearings. I replaced the 2 pinion bearings and obviously the gear set. Noise gone. Runs great! |

Not normal.... One of my SCX10's was going on 3yrs old with stock gears still, on 2.2's even. I did grease them once in awhile with marine grease though. |
