Ever since I built my son a scaler out of an old RadioShack Steve Irwin truck, I've wanted another one. Came across a mint body that still had the controller and all accessories with it and jumped at the chance. It sat around for several months while I was thinking what direction to go with it. The old truck worked okay but had an 11" wheelbase and was too heavy but really fun to drive. I decided a hybrid of sorts was the way to go and give it a more modern look at the same time. Grabbed a body from RPP salvage yard and made the hard decision to cut up a perfect rare body. Last edited by CarterFab; 10-26-2015 at 10:18 AM. |

Started with a new HR raw steel Scx chassis which made adding welded upper link brackets a breeze using our long FabTabs. Also used our hex aluminum links. The bed section was a perfect match for the Honcho can and was surprisingly easy to mount up using the same method as the honcho tune bed. Got the dremel out and clearanced for shock towers and body mounts. Last edited by CarterFab; 10-26-2015 at 10:23 AM. |

Truck is gonna look good pulling the Dinky RC woodsman trailer. Wheelbase needs to be shifted back 1/4" to fit the body best. This version of the overland is set at 12 1/8" so it should handle better than the original as well as lighter weight with the Honcho cab. Painted the bed a flat black, used a Dinky RC receiver hitch for towing duties, rc4wd shackle mount for recovery, and Krawler Konceptz license plates. |

Used some axial electronics clips to hold the licensed Hi Lift jack on the roof rack of he bed Chose the Method Roost wheels to keep it "road" legal but still have a good off road wheel look. I also took a set of the new VP center caps and machined them to look like Marlin drive flanges. The rears are just smooth to simulate caps. I built some electronics boxes out of black styrene to keep things organized and clean. The boxes use the Dinky RC interior as the "lids" when the body is installed. Makes battery changes quick and 100% hidden electronics. Also seen are the Proline Scaler shocks, VP shock hoops, MKS servo installed with the new Locked Up RC pro CMS Kit. |

On to he body. Had Krawler Konceptz print the hood decal to go with the Overland theme. Also decided to black out the canvas cover for the rear. Here are the electronics boxes with the body installed. I'm gonna add some foam to the bottom of the interior so that it makes a seal to the top of the boxes. |

Maiden voyage in the rain and was actually glad so I could check the functionality of the electronics boxes. Boxes worked perfect. Still gonna add the foam strips to the bottom interior but very happy with the cleanliness and organization from the boxes. The Tekin FXR Pro system is the only system we run in our scalers. It's got the perfect balance of torque, wheel speed, and low end control. I also get an hour to 1.5 hours out of a 1300-1400mah 3s pack and always runs cool. |

The original truck I built a few years back was a spare parts build as my son was still very young and wanted to gauge his interest before investing money in a rig. This rig was not the case and built it with only the best stuff out there as well as proto type parts from Locked UP RC. Here's the parts list breakdown Drivetrain: Scx axle housings Vp Cs and knuckles Vp vvds Vp lockouts Axial HD 38/13-43/13 gears LURC FI spools Custom Crawl front brass tubes LURC PRO CMS Kit Axial rear 4 link truss Wraith transmission(87/1 Maxx driveshafts Suspension: Front 3 link with panhard Rear 4link CFM aluminum 6061 hex links Proline Scaler dual rate shocks Vp shock hoops Chassis: HR bare steel rails Axial skid LURC CMS CFM DOM front bumper RPM rock sliders Dinky RC receiver hitch Electronics: MKS DS1220 servo Tekin FXR Tekin PRO 30 3s lipo Futaba Rx 3" Rigid light bar Wheels/tires: Vp Method Racing Roost VP XD center caps modified for scale SLW .225 hubs CI deuces wild single stage foams Vaterra Race Claws Body: Honcho cab RadioShack Steve Irwin bed Dinky RC interior KK hood decal and license plates Bowtie Tacoma grill and headlights |

I really liked the first one you built too. I've wanted to enclose the honcho bed since I bought it. I wonder if I could fab something like that up without having to find the Irwin truck.

After my romp in the mud and some water the other day, I was reminded of my last brief encounter with water that seized a lockout bearing within a couple days. I took it upon myself to do some preventative maintenance so this won't be an issue and I can enjoy the wet months coming. First up I added the foam strips to the underside of the interior to seal the top of the electronics boxes. I also took a sponge and it so it presses into the is with the esc and receiver to add more protection in case of an accidental brief plunge. I also coated my Futaba recover with corrosionX. To address the rear lockout bearing I did a free and easy mod. I cut a rubber bump stop from a Wraith shock to 1/8" wide, put some oil on the shaft and bearing, then pushed the rubber into the recess of the lockout. To further prepare for the sticky situations that are to come, I installed a roller fairlead in preparation for the CBERCFAB Juggernaut servo winch that's on its way. Also, a buddy made comment of the ghost driven truck in my last video so I resolved that as well. |

Beautiful, alot of good ideas. That rear bed is great I am surprised no one has reproduced them yet, I would like to see in person to see if I could do one for myself. The rubber shield in the lockout is great. |

It's very simple to do the mod if you can find a body. I've tried to buy three different ones on the past two days on eBay but people are asking far to much for them. A printed bed would be the best route these days probably. | |
