Default Scx10 nimh to lipo?

What all would I need to convert my scx 10 to lipo? Currently has xl5 esc and a 9.6 v battery. Want a good all around lipo setup for it but also not something that's going to break the bank.

Don't I need a low power cutoff thing? And wouldn't I also need a new esc?

The esc has lipo mode. You just have to read the directions on how to change it over to Lipo mode. You can Google it

I don't think this one does. It's about 6 years old now. The old yellow xl5's from
Traxxas. I don't remember ever hearing about them being lipo compatible

If it doesn't have a lipo cut off just pick up a lipo low voltage alarm. They cost between $5-$10 and just plug into the battery

Alright well what's a good battery to go with? Want to get a good amount of power and speed out of if but I want decent run times too. What's a good power cutoff to go with as well?

I've been very happy with this one in my SCX10:

What should I be looking for when buying a lipo battery? Like I said I want good run times but also plenty of power and speed

The largest pack that I run on any of my crawlers is a 3700mah 3S. I only run that on my Bomber (Its brushless) or on a night run with my scalers since the LEDs burn some power. On my brushed crawlers I can get a few hours out of a 2200 pack. I personally just don't see the need for the added weight of a large pack since the little ones last so long.

Pretty much all of my batteries are Turnigy or Zippy. My 2200mah Nanotechs have been heavily used for a year and a half and they are both still great.

I think the volt limit on a older XL5 is 9.6V so highest voltage LiPo you can run is 2 cell, 8.4V. 3 cell, 12.6V might fry the esc (might be ok if using a bec though but I don't know about that). As capacity, 5000mAh will get huge run times but I don't use anything bigger then 2200mAh because of the weight. Anything over 20-25C discharge should be fine.

I'm running an XL5 that's about the same age and this is the info I came up for mine but mine's a blue one which I think is a little newer then the yellow ones. Confirm voltage specs for your exact esc with Traxxas.

I use a lipo alarm like has already been mentioned since is no cutoff in the older XL5's.

if 2s is the limit i use this one in my scx10 mudder also plan to run 3s soon. for being 6000mah its pretty light i was suprised (if worried about weight), pretty long run times too

Turnigy nano-tech 6000mah 2S2P 65~130C Hardcase Lipo Pack

i was looking at the traxxas 25c 11.1v 5000mah since my esc has a traxxas connector. not a bad price and not concerned about weight (added traction). but would this be to much for my esc to handle even with a safety cutoff? or would i need to get a newer esc?

i was just checking the prices of the newer xl5's and i may just go ahead and upgrade if it can handle the 25c 11.1v 5000mah battery i was looking at?

would the 11.1v give me the most power possible? i remember when i first started the hobby i always ran the old 7v battery's then i stepped up to the 9.6 8c battery i have now and i got ALOT more power out of it, would i be correct in assuming the 11.1v and 25c would give me even more power? or is there something even better out there?

3S will probably burn up the esc. 9.6V is the rated max you can run into an XL5

Also keep in mind that 3S is 12.6V when fully charged

If you're going to upgrade your ESC, why not go ahead and get one that's better oriented for a scale truck, like having a drag brake option, such as an Axial AE-5?

Me and three close friends ran 3S lipo through old, blue XL-5s for years with no problems.

Having brakes that you have to get right versus drag brake is pretty fun.
