Default Help needed with the shocks..

ok..this is my first time building an axial kit and I have run into some problems with the shocks. I've built a number of tamiya kits before though.

All 4 shocks are extremely hard and allow for very little, if any, compression even if the hex shaped limiter is right at the top. I built it the same way I did for tamiya shocks and I didn't encounter any problems at all.

What I did was fill the shocks with the 30wt oil, compress and extend the piston to get air out, applied a little heat to the metal shock body to hasten removal of air bubbles, fully lower the piston, add a little more such that the oil will overflow when the cap is screwed on. Basically as per the manual.

I think your mistake was putting the cap on with the piston rod extended. Try again with rod fully compressed and see if that helps.

Do these shocks have the rubber bubble on the cap? if so that's what is causing your problem. Remove a little bit of the oil and it should work.

Also, are you sure it isn't the pistons binding? I sanded mine down quite a bit to get them to cycle smoothly. Mine still stick from time to time. I'm not a fan of the stock pistons whatsoever.

I thought so too, but I was watching build videos frm VanquishProducts and 1 other channel and the shocks were extended when it was capped and the manual seems to show the same

rubber o ring? The manual and the kit didn't come with any rubber cap (like those on tamiya or gmade shocks)

doubt it. it was moving smoothly just prior to the cap being screwed on.

You probably tried this already as suggested but might be a little too much oil in there. I had to take a little more out of mine which fixed the issue when I first built the kit.

This is why I think I'm just going to go with Proline shocks.

First step is to make sure that the piston is smooth and not binding. Second is that if you top off the shock with oil you have to slowly push the piston up to the top before you put the cap on, this will allow some oil to come out and create the proper amount of oil in the shock.

If built properly these shocks are really smooth and work great.

screw the cap on with the shock at full compression.

you also might have too much oil causeing hydrolock. (assembling at full extention can cause this also)

and never use heat. too many plastic bits in there with specific tollerances.

Is there an aftermarket X-ring that fits these shocks?

Think about it like this. If you fill the shock to the top with oil, then put the cap on with the rod fully extended, then where does the oil go, when you compress the shock? Nowhere, and that's the problem. There has to be enough space inside the shock body to allow room for the shaft to go inside. If it's full of oil then there is no room. So basically, like others have said. It's hydro locked. Screw the cap on with the shock compressed.

Nope. Axial uses a much smaller oring in these shocks. I REALLY wish Axial would make these shocks with a P3-sized oring, as there are tons of better Xrings out there in that size.
