Default SCX 10 II kit: trouble with wheel locking up...

Hey guys, when I let off the throttle all four wheels are locking up. I have done all the adjusting I can through the radio and have pulled apart the diffs and the transmison and not seeing why I might be binding up. I am running the Axial 20t motor and the Axial ecs. Anyone else out there having similar issues?

It sounds like the drag brake kicking in on your ESC. Most are adjustable. Which Axial ESC are you running?

Not sure of the model #. But it has the plug that you have to pull out to kill the dig and lipo cut off.

its the AE5, its not for dig but the adjustment for the drag brake...you have 2 choices 100% and 50% its default in the 100% change the jumper to the 50% position and see how it acts then.

Also I have found out that if you adjust the throttle trim after the esc calibrated the throttle you can have no drag break (kids plying with the radio when running my rc) just have to return to 0 before connecting fresh battery

Also, you should play around with the different drag break settings and easing off of the throttle when stopping. A good drag break can be your friend when crawling. Practice bringing the rig to a smooth stop, especially during a descent.

The AE5 only has 2 drag brake settings...50% and 100%...

Understood. My point was to try out both settings and easing off the throttle for smooth stops. Get a feel for what works best for the driver.

Thanks for y'all of the insight on this. I have tried adjusting the brake on the controller side and that yielded little results. Just to clarify when I let off the throttle the rig almost flips over. back wheels most of the time come off the ground.

That definitely sounds like 100% drag brake engagement. Other thing would be mechanical, perhaps axle pinion shafts need shimmed? But if that was the case, you would probably be having more issues like broken gear teeth, etc.

Perhaps a dumb question, but I built two SCX10.2 and on both I cannot spin the wheels by hand. It feels like the gearing in the transmission has to spin the motor too fast and that requires a lot of effort. If I take out the slipper cover and turn the pinion gear by hand the transmission feels very smooth (I use no shims).

Is it normal that I can't spin the wheels by hand or should they move quite easily?

When the whole drivetrain is connected, it depends on what type of motor you have whether or not it should be easy to spin a tire by hand. Once you disconnect connection through the gears to the motor in some manner (removing the slipper clutch) it should spin freely, and the motor itself should be easier to turn also because you're not trying to turn all the gears in the drivetrain at the same time.
The type of motor matters in the number of poles, brushless vs. brushed, etc.
