Default Portals, custom chassis, old school bronco body...

It's been a long time since I did a build thread so, I decided to do it right... It all started when I preordered some scx10 2 portal axles for another build I was doing. Long story short, I built that truck before the portals showed up.

The chassis: loosely based on the stock axial. I designed it to correct some suspension short comings and make it lighter. I've been toying with the design for about 4 months and finally decided to cut it. It's not perfect and I see there was a gcode error but, good enough for me. Its built from .125 g10 fr4. The cross braces are aluminum tube, threaded for 3mm. It's designed to use a stock skid but, I didnt have one on hand so, I cut one from 3/16 delrin. (I typically build pulling trucks and it s what I had in stock).

Axles: deadloc portals, stock scx10 2 housings. It's getting all the goodies (once they show up), hardened gears, good bearings etc.

Body: I dont remember who pulled these back in the day, he was a vendor on here. It's a dove tailed gen 1 Bronco designed to fit the wraith.

Tires and wheels: 2.2s, that's all I know for sure.

My plan is to have it ready for Horizon fest so I can mess around when we arent pulling but, I have a stack of customer orders I need to get done.

Dynamic Concepts... that's it. I couldnt come up with it.

As for flex, this frame design is far stiffer than a stock scx10. The tab setup I use really makes them rigid. I use the same design for pulling trucks that I sell and people are amazed how it works yet is extremely light.

I pulled out my well worn and used cowrc pit mat and my jar of udder butter to assemble the axles. I made sure to squeeze some Udder Butter into the open internal bearings. A little on the end of the axle shaft will help keep the axles water tight (coats the bearing race as it goes in) and keeps the axles from seizing to the locker. I decided to forgo scale and went for the tried and true servo on axle, using a hot racing mount.

I believe I have more into these axles than the ones on my Jeep.

Time to start making links... I pulled out some .25" delrin tube, my long drill bit and some 8/32 all thread.

A few questions on the links:

1) can you bend the delrin after assembly (as in high clearance links)

2) is there much (any?) weight advantage over, say, 1/4" stainless tube? I know the delrin will slide nicer.

3) what's your source for the tube?

1) yes, they bend nicely. You just need to take the bend into account when measuring. I also like to warm the delrin before I bend it.

2) yes, they are considerable lighter and as stated, slide real nice

3) mcmaster-carr

After assembling the chassis, I decided to make some small changes. Now to find some wheels that will clear the portals.

How much wider do the portals make the axles? Thought about getting a set of portals for one of my rigs

Maybe 5mm... barely noticed. The bigger issue is it limits wheel choice because of the size of the portal box.

So something like a 1.55 is a no go? Or would a wider offset help? I usually build more "scale" looking rigs, so maybe portals wouldn't be ideal
