This question has been asked before, and could be found with a search or simply looking back a page or two. But I assume that the cheap battery is a nimh, and if so the voltage drop that occurs when you go full boar on the skinny pedal either forward or backwards kicks the lipo cutoff feature on. It's set to on from the factory. If you are going to continue to run nimh than you need to use a castle link( since the esc is basically castle) and turn the lipo cutoff off. Or you could buy a lipo and run it until one of the other highly documented failures occur.

I'm pretty sure you can manually change the setting on the stock esc if you don't have a Castle Link.
