Default Wraith with R1 axles

So I recently picked up a wraith chassis for a good price. I only need axles/diffs to tet this bad boy wreckin the rocks.
So heres my question, DO I go with stock wriath axles or aftermarket ones.
I found these and I was wondering how hard they would be to mount up.
Any advice or input would be appricaited. Thanks

At one time not too long ago - I was looking at getting a R1 - what made me decide not to get it was the axles. Yes - the portal design is cool - BUT from everything I read (and I read every thread) - the little arms on the end of the dogbones are notorious for breaking off.

Just my $0.02

Wraith axles are tough.

I have a wraith chassis with R1 axles and so far no problem with them. Itīs easy to mount them on the chassis, the only problem you may have is the steering servo, it cant stay in the axle. But itīs easy mount it in the chassis with a panhard bar

Bumping a slightly older post but there are some threads about cutting down CVDs from other RCs (TLT & Wheely King ) with appropriate knuckles that are much stronger. everything else in the axle seems to hold up. the axles are pretty beef stock other than the dog bones

Ive had R1 axles....keep the axial axles, whether they are scx10 or wraith axles....Way better!!!
For the things I put my trucks through, R1's dont stand a chance....
Funniest thing is, even one of the biggrest crawler stores in the land, run scx10 axles on their R1 Chassis...

I installed r1 portal axles under my wraith with 4WS and I see no problem with the steering servos on the axles. I still have plenty of articulation room and that's with the droop kit installed to lower the chassis

Forgot to mention I also purchased the "R1 adjustable upper link mounts" from ckrc. Allows you to use the wraith links or something similar and eliminates the minor lateral slop movement the axles have. It will still require some minor modification of the links to get the right pinion angle to the transmission. I'm about to start that process on my when I get a chance.

I'm building the same exact truck right now out of spare parts I had kicking around. Wanted to make a junk basher for my nephew and these where the axles and chassis I had. If you can post some pics of it or a running video so I can see if i'm just better off getting a set of scx10 axles and scraping this idea. My r1 axles tho are upgraded with every part I could find for them including the CVD's

* thread resurrection *

I just put the R1 portals on my Wraith and they fit up pretty easily with stock links, wheels, etc. There is a bit of rubbing but nothing the Dremel can't fix. I especially like how the stock wheels fit up and stay tucked up close to the portal gear box. I'll never go back to the stock axles, that's how awesome the R1 axles work (and look) for my driving style. I'm not a go fast guy with $$$ power. Just running $10 brushed crawler motor and gear reduction box from RC4WD.

The stock Axial axles are almost bullet proof. Never had any failures or problems. I just don't like the width & fat housing draggin' everywhere. Besides, it's fun to try something new & different.

I'll post some up close photos or walk around vid later on. I was going to do a crawlin' video but the plastic Axial trans gears stripped out yesterday and LHS don't stock sheat So I'm SOL till Wednesday unless I can make an R2 trans fit.

Just got my RTR Wraith rollin' on these Gmade portals. They're an easy swap with the stock links if you use the adjustable upper link mount (hop-up item). I really like the look and extra clearance.

I'm going to go EZ on these axles and try to make them last. I've already fully roasted the Axial steering servo, motor & trans gears.

Flex testing with stock shocks and mounting.

As you can see, I'm still using the stock Wraith wheels/tires. I like how the wheels stay tucked up close but there was a bit of rubbing on the steering links so I had to make my own steering link. So far so good.

This is kinda sketchy picture I know. This is front end.

Rear end.

This is that upper link mount (rear end) that makes the swap so easy. Some cones were added to keep the links from rubbing on the mount.

The high pinion really keeps the drive-shaft angle to a minimum. This is stock drive-shaft.

To increase the steering angle with the Gmade R1 axles, I used the Dremel to remove a little material here.

If you expect to run the stock Wraith wheels with the Gmade portal axles, you could have a clearance issue here. If you're using other wheels, with a different offset than stock, you won't have an issue. The Gmade portal axles come with a set of links and ball ends.

For the front axle and retaining the stock Wraith links, I had to reverse the upper link mount to get a good pinion angle. Spacers were needed to clear the pumpkin. A short stack of washers could work just as easily.

I went with the 7 degree c-hubs (hop-up item) and this is what you get.

The width is about 10-1/2" with the Gmade portal axles and stock Axial Wraith wheels.
