Default The 'Watermelon' - My Daughter's build

Well, last year I built her a SCX10 rig, I got in a pinch and she let me part it out as long as I got her a replacement (per my wife). So the tax refund hit the bank and I hit the hobby store. It's going to remain fairly stock for awhile as she learns to build and drive it.

Stats:
Wraith kit
HR diff spools
HR metal trans gears
HR standard ratio bevel gears front/rear
32p gearing - gonna start at 56/14 or 60/14
AE2 ESC w/CC BEC w/ 35t Integy or 20t RTR motor
HK Ti geared servo
RTR R35 wheels/tires

Started with a Wraith kit and Proline Jeep body.

Worked on it a little before it was bedtime.

I made a stop at a local hobby shop to get a paint mask made as a surprise. The next day her school cancelled because of weather, so we went and got some paint, this is the end result. Painted it at work as we've got a spray booth available. First time I've sprayed Tamiya PS, so far I like it better than the Pactra stuff. All 3 colors were Tamiya, she picked them out. Someone at work said it looked like a watermelon, but she hasn't named it yet so that can change.

Test fit on my cage, as her's isn't built yet.

Still lots to do...need to get a tool set for her, it's hard to work on 2 rigs with one set of tools. LOL

More to come...

It's bittersweet, it's been years since I've purchased a kit, so I want to tear into it and build it. But it's her's and she want to learn the ins and outs of it.

Absolutely Ryan. She had fun with her SCX10, I see endless smiles while she's running this one.

Whoa, they grow up way too fast, slow'er down a little bud. LOL The middle one wants one, but I don't quite trust her yet. Maybe get her a micro or mini to bomb around.

I seen her thread, that's what helped me decide a Wraith was a good place to start. Once some aluminum upgrades start being installed later, I think we're gonna do some color scheme to match the body. We were hoping to get her's done quickly (this weekend), it's proving to be difficult so far.

That's awesome! My "little one" (she's 14 now) loves to go out with me and run the RC's. I don't think she'd sit around and build one - though you never know. Now it's just getting my wife involved!

Cheers,
Doc

Doc, my wife wants no part in the RC world, kinda wish she would, but having 2 younger daughters as well gotta have someone to push the stroller. LOL She does like to go walk the trails though. And we've got a backpack thing for the youngest. I might give that a try it'd eliminate the stroller pushing.

Update, no progress has been made lately. Me working 2nd shift has been the road block. I did stop at the LHS and picked up a set of hex drivers she can call hers. No excuses now for her to work the same time I'm working on mine. LOL

Well, turns out the HobbyKing Ti geared servo is junk, worked awesome up to the gears stripping. I purchased 3 of these to put in her Wraith, my Wraith, and another rig that's in the works. On Sunday a small group of us got together, I thrashed the main output gear on all three of these. I'm thinking that there is a defect in the gears, too much backlash/ bad design. The gear is made from aluminum also, the rest of the geartrain is titanium. Sounds like a bad combo to me. Anyway, I ordered a Savox SA-1230SG & SA-1231SG as replacements for the 2 Wraiths. Not sure which one she will end up with, I get first pick, haha.

Well, we got some wrench-time in last night until bedtime.

Swapping out the stock R&P for a hardened steel & HR Spool. I accidentally ordered 1 instead of 2, so we had to go diving back into the axles.

She also built the seats and stickered them, while I was building the shocks. Got the lower links assembled. We are going to tackle the transmission and cage today. Really hoping we can get it to RTR status today.

I apoligize for the large pictures, Photobucket is being a PAIN to use on my PC since they've rolled out the new site. Anyway more to come soon.

Updates - Not rolling yet, but move forward a bit.

Doing work on the interior.

Working on the rear section of the cage.

Last one I have. The cage halves are together, I'll get a photo of that in the morning.

To be continued...

Now that is so cool! So many of the kids these days, you can't get them away from the computer. This is a pleasant surprise. I hope she gets lots of enjoyment out of building and running it. Good luck to you!
