Default Another Flexo

What do you get when you own a RTR EXO-Terra that you can't show any love and a Wraith RTR that has seen better days.....

That's right, a Flexo.

I have enjoyed the idea inside my head for a while now and completed a mental inventory of parts that may be needed. Turns out I had everything I would need to get it running in my hobby room already.

My plan was to use the wraith skid and rear axle and graft it into the EXO chassis with a wheelbase no greater than that of my favored wraith. While at the same time using the wraith trans and the EXO brushless set up it certainly all came together but not without a sacrifice of an additional 1/4 inch of wheelbase, not a deal breaker by any means. I could have shortened it up but I would have lost critical EXO plastic tub mounts that would have caused weakness when the EXO cage was re-attached.

Pictures so I don't loose anyone...

Total parts came from both original trucks except for the front drive shaft. Had to borrow that from my twin hammers rear end. Either a extended output for the wraith trans or a longer MIP set-up will be required, short by an inch.

All in all I am happier with this rig than the other two. A definite welcomed addition to the stables that will receive love in the form of upgraded parts as I beat the existing into submission.

I will be happy to answer any questions if you want to tackle this project too.

Lol, I'll get some video up. Definitely taking it to Mushroom Bowl the next time I go VTA racing to run it on their outdoor track. We race 1/5 scales there and the track has lots of jumps to let the Flexo fly.

After I tear it down for clean up I will post a "how to and where to cut" as a part if the build thread. My OCD had me in full built it mode because the idea had to be released from inside my brain.

Are there any suggestions from others that have also created a successful Flexo conversion?

My concerns mainly lay with gearing at this point to have it at the right speed to be just faster than a wraith but still able to crawl.

Options to include either a two speed Twin Hammers or Summit trans. Maybe even a Summit front diff for selectable locker in the front...... Dam it... There I go again....

Looks awesome. Someday I will turn my wraith, or build one.

Small update. I moved the battery due to weight bias:

In faith to using existing wraith or EXO parts I used the wraith battery tray on standoffs above the steering set up.

It has much better driving feel with the centered battery and forward bias.

I may be blending in a Summit two speed into this next. May have to change the name to a SEXO, lol.

I forgot to mention that I changed back to the exo wheels and trencher tires. The 2.2's were just too large to get good speed. That may change if the SEXO conversion works. I have another exo roller on the way to be able to figure the trans out before having to tear this apart. I already have the summit trans and a STRC chassis waiting on the bench.

Well the summit two speed did not fit (no real surprise there). I did get a twin hammer two speed in but haven't had a chance to run it because of the weather. Pics will be a while since I am at school in Kansas.

This is what the section title should be if they ever make one for solid axle conversions.

I may be wrong... but it looks a whole lot simpler than grafting an exo front end into a wraith
I'd love to see a side by side comparison actually, to see if one performs better than the other.

The drawback is that in certain rule sets (if you want to crawl) it's considered a "pan or tub" chassis. It is easier and cheaper since there is nothing to buy and wheelbase is up to the builder for the most part.

I am still planning out my step by step and measured cut lines. When I get back home I'll start posting it. Thanks for the interest and comments.
