Default 1.9 Wraith, experiment 626

well I decided to try a 1.9 wraith rebuild.

I tossed stuff together a couple days ago and ran it for about 3 minutes, then it locked up..trans problem. I tore it apart and found something very interesting.

I bought the trans off of the for sale section as well as the wraith chassis and other parts. This will teach me to inpsect every used component I buy and to ask questions before I buy, my name is Harold and I am a dumbass lol!

on to the pics..can you spot the reason for the trans problem? not just the effect, but the root cause? This was after 3 minutes on a 3s 5000mAH lipo

now the chassis had been hacked up pretty bad, alot of structure missing and a lot of stripped out holes. the front bumper was chopped up to look like a stinger, so I tried putting my original front bumer on from my wraith and it would fit and wouldnt tighten up on the left side..

found out that the front frame rails had been shortened slightly and the screws now bottomed out in the holes..so new frame rails are enroute..

I reused the scx10 upper wishbone links on the front and rear, a little narrow but they bend easy enough, tossed a new futaba servo in it, tossed 2 stock scx10 diffs under it with 1.9 trepadors and the rear driveshaft...it was only 2wd when I tried it out lol... the stock scx diffs are noisy as hell, but when I put the guts into the one VP housing I have, they both are smooth as butter..so my conclusion is the stock plastic housings are warped.

I made the fastback mod with a twist, I used the top of the rear cage as a spare tire holder/chassis stiffener.. actually quite easily with extra left over parts and a few M3 fine thread screws

also tossed on a set of proline hammers on a set of proline eight shooter beadlocks, looking much better now

parts used were a couple 3 hole shock pistons, 2 plastic spacers, 3 M3 screws about an inch long or so, 2 lower wraith links.

the holes on the links lined up perfectly with the upper cage when I heated it up and bent it down. then the tab with a screw hole in it on the upper cage allows for the long screw to hold down the spare..

its almost like it was made to do that! lol

Thanks...i was really bummed out when i opened the trans up to find out why it locked up. I found the idler gear melted into the side of the trans case..difficult to get the case apart would be an understatement

Found that there was no shaft or bearings on the idler gear....no wonder it grenaded on my 3s lipo..

New shaft..hardened idler gear and bearings are on the way...i already had the other hardened trans gears on hand...

I got my trans idler gear shaft and bearings today

here are a few shots of the snow run today, this thing is actually really fun on 3s 5000mAH. I put a couple duratrax shocks and springs on the rear to help lower it and cranked the collars up on the front shocks to lower the front as well.

Also took out the upper wishbones and put the homemade links back in that came with the chassis. I got the frame rails replaced as well as the electronics box brace so the chassis is more solid

the 2.2 Proline hammers do very well in the snow. and clean out well with the wheel speed of the 3s battery, the gearing I am running is 54t 32p spur and a 14t 32p pinion.

I am running a spare vanguard 2900KV motor and AE-3 ESC system I have and as expected it does cog a bit if you try to slow crawl, but I didnt build this for crawling..strictly bashing/trail running

I am gonna run the dogcrap outta this setup and see what my temps are and see how long it holds together

I changed my pinion from 14t to 17t.. went from 3.85 to 3.17 against a 54t spur...much better for speed bashing in the snow!

I have made a few more changes, i put some crawler king shocks on, put on a set of white dot rovers and put the electronics box in the rear. I also mounted headlights and tail lights, now I have to run wiring for everything to be put in the rear box...

I like the spare tire/fastback mod...prolly gonna swipe the idea for my rig, but I'll give the credit where it's due. Very creative!!!

well i got rid of the crawler king shocks, just too weak and tall...ended up going back to the wraith shocks on the rear and a pair of duratrax evader ext2 shocks on the front.

now it sits lower and handles the brushless power much better..

also painted the old poison spyder half roof black and put it on..

the HB white dot rovers are on for good I think, they do so well on it so far that I can see changing them out.

well more changes tonight, i never got used to liking the short wheelbase and it made it very easy to flip and roll...it was 12.5 inches.

the homemade links were not long enough and to top it all off, when I laid them out, they were not all the same length, not even 4 long or 4 short...they were all different lengths..

so for now I put on the stock scx10 links front and rear and now have a wheelbase equal to my 2.2 wraith which is 14 inches. my steering servo also now clears the frame under compression. I will get pics up tomorrow of it out in the snow, should do much better!

I probably have enough spare parts to do yours if you ever want to do the fastback mod.

I have been tweaking this setup for a few hours now. I took the huge rovers off and put on my 2.2 flat irons for a more scale look and now it will do back flips on demand! right now the gearing is 54/12 for a 4.5 ratio..seems about right for a brushless basher..still running 3s as I am waiting for an adapter to run my 2s lipo..but so far its a blast! have to see what fails first!
