Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler I installed the beef tubes into the VP axles today. Took a bit of grinding to get them to fit properly, but this was expected. Looking forward to seeing how my Wraith climbs with this extra weight (including the new wheels); it climbed incredibly well before these mods.... hopefully like a spider now! I also threw a pair into my son's AX10 Deadbolt front axle, that was a very straight forward installation. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler I'm so torn between stock cage and fastback mod,how did you decide?... I must have both! Looks awesome man |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thanxs. I do like both versions too. I just can't leave well enough alone and I wanted to personalize my Wraith, so I decided to do the fastback mod. |

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Well...... I bit the bullet and ordered up the MMP and Tekin ROC 412 3100kV. I also added the upgraded Axial motor plate, which I'm hoping will work fine with this motor. I will switch over to a 32p spur and pinion too. I wasn't going to order these parts for my Wraith because I am extremely happy with it's current performance and the Yeti will supplement my need for speed, but I just can't wait a month or so to get my pre-ordered Yeti! I sure am looking forward to getting these parts in from RPP. |

Using castle link make sure you select "crawler reverse"...drag brake set to 30% and I would leave throttle/break curve alone...use "sensored only" and use the sensor wire that comes with the motor. The motor doesn't come prewired...you will need to supply your own wire and bullet connectors( I used castle bullet connectors 4 mm) Also I didn't see if you upgraded the gears in the axles to the heavy duty ones from axial...the ones for od/ud...if you haven't done so I would as the stock gears may not hold up with the motor. I don't know if the axial motor plate will cause any issues...I rebuilt my trans using the hot racing aluminum housing and their light weight steel gears. I bought that single plate and spur combo from supershafty...I too am using 32p 56t spur with a 11t pinion gear...good punch and lots of torque! Again I apologize if you know this already...I'm a noob and spent a lot of time figuring out how to set up this motor and esc. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thank you very much for words of wisdom btango05, I appreciate it. I wasn't sure if the motor came with the wires or not and now I know; I will pick some up at my LHS. I'm using the stock axle gears. I've read they do pretty good. If not, I will simply upgrade them to the HD versions. The trans is already upgraded, so hopefully I should be good. I keep hearing once you go brushless, you'll never go back.....and I'm very much looking forward to NOT looking back! |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Went for an awesome 5 hour crawl today up Mount Doug with a bunch of guys and their various rigs. I absolutely love how my Wraith is performing right now. The new Beef Tubes and heavier GearHead aluminum wheels made my machine crawl like their was no tomorrow...It was mesmerizing to see it crawl near vertical rocky terrain. I crawled the crap outta my Wraith today and the only incident was driver induced...took a jump and landed in a way that bent my servo horn. A quick bend back straight with pliers and I was good to go. Here's a few pics of my dirty Wraith in case no one believes it actually gets used!!!! <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573326920/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_32"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4311/35573326920_ec48e9ce19_o.jpg" width="1024" height="611" alt="Wraith_32"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35829754191/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_29"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4330/35829754191_419e20cd90_o.jpg" width="1024" height="594" alt="Wraith_29"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35829754091/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_31"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4312/35829754091_f431216301_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Wraith_31"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573327060/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_30"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4313/35573327060_afe65bc69d_o.jpg" width="1024" height="717" alt="Wraith_30"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Photo OP: <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35152443013/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_33"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4318/35152443013_de3e0c170c_o.jpg" width="1024" height="567" alt="Wraith_33"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler The Wraith is all stripped down and cleaned up..... ready for the motor and electronics transplant. I hope the package of parts arrives this week. Those of you running the MMP, are you using a BEC for the aftermarket servo? I have been powering my Hitec 7955 with a CC BEC @ 6.0 volts with the stock ESC. I thought I read the MMP has the capability of providing 6.0 volts to the servo if I remember correctly. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler No you need to run the cc bec for sure. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thanxs...BEC will be used. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler The good stuff has arrived....I must say, I love how quick RPP gets their orders out the door. Less than a week and it's already in my hands up in Canada. Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler The MMP, ROC 412 3100kV and Specktrum SRS 4210 receiver went fairly well, although I was up until the wee hours of the morning because I took my time. Initial impressions from within my shop is that my Wraith has a boatload of new found power. There is one issue I encountered though. When I turn the transmitter off before the MMP, the machine will rocket to full acceleration. I found this out the hard way because everything on my shop bench was wiped out when the Wraith bolted all of a sudden! It was like an Audi from the 80's (for the older folks, this will be funny). Anyhow, I went through all of the settings in the MMP and receiver and couldn't figure it out. I know the simple solution is not to turn off the transmitter before I power down the MMP...but sometimes shit happens and I don't want my Wraith accidentally going out of control, such as being out of range or if someone else may inadvertently turn the transmitter off. Any assistance with this will be truly appreciated. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler I figured it out, I had to rebind the radio and receiver and re-calibrate. It's all good now....no more unintended acceleration issues! Now to get this machine all put back together and do some testing. I changed over to 32p gearing. My baseline will be 56 / 12 and I'll see how that goes. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler After a quick rip on the street, all I can say is this Wraith is incredible. The rubber literally spins on old rough asphalt. In a scale scenario, the power is simply violent with this new setup. Although all the drive train has been beefed up, it just feels like something has to give.....I wonder what part will be first that self destructs? I'm hoping to get out and get this machine tested in a day of crawling soon. This Wraith has been getting mods for the last two years now and I would like to think that I'm pretty much done now. I'm sure the Yeti is going to go thru this modification madness as well. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler So it's no longer a crawler? :( |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler It sure is a crawler....it's the best of both worlds now because the ROC 412 series is made for crawling too (it's sensored). Sounds like there's a few rigs heading out for a crawl tomorrow...I will be sure to report back with how she performs. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Looking forward to your report, and video.....lol |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Two words describe the performance of my Wraith now....."Holy Shit". If you have been on the fence with this motor / ESC combo....do not wait any longer. I am in love all over again. Goes like a bat out of hell and crawls just the same with a brushed motor, if not better because you have massive amounts of power to get the wheels spinning to power over everything! Yes, you can have the best of both worlds. In fact, I'm going to dial down the power a bit off of initial throttle because it's just too much! I learned one thing today, don't stand behind my Wraith and give 'er...my shoes were covered in dirt from the massive roosts! I better start stocking up on replacement rubber. Now I'm having second thoughts about even getting the Yeti....this machine does it all now....ya right, I'm not cancelling my pre-order! |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler That's awesome!! And if that motor is ever available in a waterproof version, I'll be all over it! |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Waterproof would be icing on the cake....but that's OK, I can live without that aspect with this machine. Maybe the Yeti will be made into a full waterproof basher! Hmmm, now ya got me thinking. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Good photos start by knowing how to use the camera. Looks awesome. The last few photos look to be fish eyeing. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler super nice rig there i must say im runing the pit bull xor on my wraith there great up and over almost everything they come up on |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thanxs. I would not hesitate to purchase another set of these Pit bull tires and foams.... which will likely be sooner than later with the new power plant! Upload your pics to Photobucket then link them to the thread using the img code. |

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler It's the Beeftube that needs a bit of grinding; only need to remove approximately 1.5 mm or so to widen the groove for the screws that pass through for the shock/link mounts. I used my Dremel with a diamond shaft tool to widen the groove (it needs to be wider the inner side, towards the pumpkin on both sides, top and bottom. Then I used a small diamond coated round jewelers file to smooth the edges. Lots of testing fitting required....but it will work. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Since I have the "fastback" mod, there's no coverage for my new MMP ESC; I'm not a mudder, but if it starts raining I wanted to give the MMP some protection from the elements. I decided to fab up a cover from aluminum flashing. It's simply pressure fits into position with tabs so it can be removed without tools. I quite like how it worked out, leaves plenty of space for airflow and looks kinda kool. It's little things like this that I love fabricating. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35152441553/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_41"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4294/35152441553_bb993ce2e5_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Wraith_41"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35152442023/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_38"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4311/35152442023_4595fdca5f_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Wraith_38"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791650072/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_42"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4329/35791650072_54294a5308_o.jpg" width="1024" height="749" alt="Wraith_42"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35122029334/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_39"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4312/35122029334_f69d92474b_o.jpg" width="1024" height="770" alt="Wraith_39"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35152441753/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Wraith_40"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4302/35152441753_3401177a72_o.jpg" width="816" height="668" alt="Wraith_40"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
Very nice! |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thanxs. On another note, I stopped by the LHS today and for shits and giggles, picked up a 3300mAh 4S 30C LIPO battery because one can never have enough power! Brought it home, charged it up and took the Wraith for a test drive on the street. WOW....incredible power. All of my driveline is modded up with all the good parts, except I was running the stock axle gears.....I guess I'm heading back down to the LHS tomorrow to pick up new Axial HD axle gears. The front one gave it up fairly quickly. BUT WOW, did I mention how much power my Wraith had and still able to crawl at a snail's pace? I'll keep the 4S battery for messing around. I also picked up a 5000mAh 3S 50C LIPO battery for a spare and a 6000mAh 2C 50C LIPO battery for my son's Deadbolt. With the batteries I already have, now I have enough battery power to keep both machines running all day long. It will be nice not having to worry about conserving juice now. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Now that I have cleaned up the parts and VP axle, I can see what went wrong. The four screws that bolt the FI Spool onto the main gear had backed out and were rubbing the inner casing, which obviously caused the gears to improperly mesh together. Lesson learned, red Loctite for the FI Spools is a must. I guess I should rip apart the rear axle as well and get this taken care of too. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Man that ESC cover looks Badass!! Great job! You just gave me a few ideas for one of my rigs haha. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Quote:

Lol...you know that you were looking for an excuse to upgrade the gears ;-) btw I think your fastback mod is exceptional! It looks like you have an anti sway bar or something...do you? |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Thanxs. The spools are holding out great.... so far. Not a big deal to torch the spool bolts if I ever need to remove it. It kinda was an intentional excuse, I wanted to see where the weak link was before I hit the trail again. Everything in the tranny was perfect. While I was in there, I swapped out my 12t pinion for a 11t. No anti-sway.... the fastback mod was built to be very tough and that's how that design came about. Ties multiple points together. |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler All is good now. Picked up a pair of Axial HD 43/13T axle gears and my machine is good to go!!!! |
Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler Another fantastic day of crawling at Mt. Doug in Victoria, BC. I know I keep going on about my new motor/ESC set-up, but man 'O man, it is truly incredible. The ROC412 3100kV motor combined with the MMP is out of this world. My Wraith is dialed in perfectly. Being able to crawl at such a controlled low speed one second and then the next second, so much power to create a dust storm. I didn't even use the 4S battery today and was blown away by the performance. For a six hour run today, I only used one 5000c 3S 50c battery and didn't even come close to draining the second 3300 3S 30c battery. It just can't get any better with this combo. Here's some pics from today..... <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791613472/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-01"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4291/35791613472_1888b35bb7_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-01"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573290690/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-05"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4292/35573290690_aa7af492d8_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-05"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791613182/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-03"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4294/35791613182_ab605feae5_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-03"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573290790/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-02"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4317/35573290790_fc23b8b6f4_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-02"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791613022/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-06"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4311/35791613022_e3a7b7f225_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-06"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791612792/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-11"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4327/35791612792_44a56bae83_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-11"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573290200/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-13"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4327/35573290200_7b9cf1e712_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-13"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573290490/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-10"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4319/35573290490_9d799e0fc7_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-10"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35573290290/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-12"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4304/35573290290_7dca49bbe6_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-12"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/156142005@N05/35791612342/in/album-72157682732498833/" title="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-14"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4320/35791612342_7097c69b24_o.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="Mt_Doug_7_Jul_14-14"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
