Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Looks awesome! I used your build as a template for lol
I just finished putting in full VP axles in my spawn.
Question? How or what did you use for the upper mounts on your power stroke shocks?
Also what springs are you running?

bilinvic 02-02-2015 09:26 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Thanxs goatz. The front shocks are in the most forward stock mount hole and the rears use the Blue Monkey trailing arm mounts, which are no where near the stock mounts.

Front Powerstroke shocks use blue bottom springs w/ green top springs and the rear Powerstroke shocks use blue springs top and bottom.

How do you like those double deuce foams?

bilinvic 02-02-2015 09:40 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

They work good... no complaints. They are on my son's Wraith now with the Voodoo tires.

Can you explain exactly what you used to do this?

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Once the required length was determined, I cut a section of aluminum tube the length between the link end and the plastic "shock body" and slipped it over the threaded rod. When the link end is tightened up, it snugs the aluminum tube from spinning.

Yeah what size tubing?

I honestly don't know, I have a collection of scrap aluminum metal from my Automotive Modeling days. I can tell you the OD is 3/16" though.

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

WHy did you swap out the Voodoo tires for the Axial? Out of the Pit Bulls, Voodoo and Axial...which tire do you think performed the best?

bilinvic 02-06-2015 07:56 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Because I was so impressed with the Axial 1.9 Falken Wildpeaks on my SCX10, I decided I wanted to try out the 2.2 version on my Wraith. I have to say, I'm very impressed with the 2.2 performance as well. It really is a tough call which tire performs the best though. The Pitbulls work really good, but they are too wide for my personal liking.

On another note, I am DMG's build list for their Trailing Arm Stiffy Kit.....I can't wait as this will totally change the look of my Wraith.

bilinvic 02-12-2015 08:36 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Well, I wasn't 100% satisfied with the performance of the CMS, so like many others, I have reverted back to the axle mounted servo. In this case, performance overrules cosmetics! I also noticed that with the CMS, the front frame was being bent downwards resulting in less suspension travel before the shocks maxed out. I may end up getting new frame rails with RC4WD steel frame mounted bumper supports because they are still bent downwards, but not as much as with the CMS. This could also be attributed to the new Stinger bumper because this is the first part that takes any impact from any front rollovers.

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

This is on the way for my Wraith. Jerry @ DMG killed it with this Trailing Arm Stiffy Kit.

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

While I'm waiting for the DMG Stiffy Kit to arrive, I'm getting my Wraith prepped for surgery! The rear half of the chassis/cage is cut off. While I have everything taken apart, I replaced the skid plate and retired the old one to the parts box!

I also changed the driver's head to the skull version since it is the Black Pearl Stiffy Kit!

I'm not 100% sure which direction I'm going to go with the body panels. I like the RTR graphics with the black, grey, green color scheme. I'll fabricate panels that roll around the rear interior, but can't go any further at this point until I have the stiffy kit in place. The hood is painted with Spaz Stix Mirror Chrome...which by the way is spectacular paint, the finish is the best chrome paint I have ever seen.

That's what I said above my 5th scale when I had it. This one is going to just as bad I just got my second 300$ in from rpp I have foams and six bolts coming from ci and the stump back and front bumper coming from dgm lol. Is that the stock wraith body and hood your using.

I'm on the list for DMG's front bumper too. Yes, stock hood and side panels for now.

It is very refreshing to watch you crank out these incredible builds. I am more impressed each time I see one of these come together. The DMG piece is killer! I know you eventually get these dirty, you must carry a box of tissues for the tears when they get dirty! :) Awesome!

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Thanks joe122. I don't baby my rigs when they are out on the rocks......I do baby them after each run for cleaning and maintenance. My new Wroncho Bug is getting it's cherry popped tomorrow and yes, it will hurt when the Curries get their first scrapes.

bilinvic 02-25-2015 10:43 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

My Wraith took on a whole new persona today with the custom built DMG trailing arm stiffy kit (one of three ever built in this configuration).....and I have to say that I love how it looks. DMG's workmanship is exceptional.
I fab'd up the rear rounded panels to keep to give a finished look. I'm on the build list to get the DMG front bumper too.

I have a few more parts on order from RPP:

Crawler Innovations 6.0T Double Deuce Pair - Soft Outer (2 pairs)
Hot Bodies Sedona 2.2 Tire White Compound (2 pairs)
SSD 2.2" Steel 10 Hole Wheels; Black (2 pairs)
AMF Racing Aluminum Axial Wraith Half Side Panel Set

I've read the Sedona tires are awesome on the rocks, so I figured I will give them a try. Some buddies of mine use the Rovers and they do very well...we call these "cheater tires"!!!!

Looking good! I really like that wheel and tire combo. I may have to get a set of those wheels for the yeti. Just need to decide on tires since I have the u4's mounted on 6 bolts.

Have you been able to test the dampening with that extra king shock?

Thanxs. Soon it will be sporting the all black SSD wheels. The dampening is pretty much the same. The King shock is there's mostly for "the look". I did find that I had to put higher rate lower rear springs in because the blue springs were sagging too much for my liking. The Proline Power Stroke rear Slash shocks are very, very smooth.

I like this version of the shorty stiffy kit better than the original which was quite a bit shorter, which to me looked too "stumpy".

I have him building me the stump back I was on the fence about that and the TA SK but I already bought the full vanquish link set. What width hubs are you using on the gearhead wheels.

bilinvic 02-26-2015 06:30 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

As far as I know mine is stumpy too, just a longer stumpy than the original...I could be wrong! I'm using the hubs that came stock with the GH wheels, not sure of their measurement. I stretched the rear axle out a bit so now my wheelbase is 14.5".

ribaja 02-26-2015 06:34 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Good to know on the GH wheels I have the same set up on my yeti I would just have to change out the rear hubs for the wraith.

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Are you changing the wheels out for looks or performance? I am considering those Gear Head wheels but worried they may be too heavy or too wide

bilinvic 02-27-2015 08:57 AM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Both actually. My rig is quite heavy so I would like to take away some of the rotating mass. I do however highly recommend the Gear Head wheels, I have a couple pairs of them and they are perfect.

bilinvic 03-04-2015 06:27 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

I received my order from RPP...turns out the SSD beadlock rims won't work with the Sedona tires. The rims are too narrow for the tires. Not a big deal as I have a new set of Axial Rocksters in Black Chrome that work great and still keep the rotating mass minimized. The Sedona tires look awesome and are super sticky...can't wait to go and try them out on the rocks. I also received AMF Racing's aluminum half side panel set. I decided this Wraith was also worthy of Currie axles, so the VP aluminum axles were swapped out for the silver Curries.

Other than the DMG front bumper that I am waiting to get built, the transformation is essentially complete....but as we all know, an RC Crawler is NEVER complete! :lmao:

Looking awesome! Do you mostly crawl with it or what other type of playing do you use it for?

You'll love the performance of those tires. Had them on my first wraith, they worked in every situation. Only reason I removed them was to install a more scale looking tire. You keep improving the appearance of the wraith.

That is a sick wraith. What did you use for the hood pins

bilinvic 03-05-2015 09:31 PM

Re: bilinvic's Wraith Rock Crawler

Thanxs. The hood pins are two pairs of Traxxas Battery Hold Down Kits (3727). I'm sure hoping I can get out this weekend for a crawl with this new set-up.

Well did you make it out this weekend? Interested to see how the shake down run went.
