Just say no to both ESCs! Check out the HobbyWing WP1060 or WP1080 for two great, inexpensive, and waterproof ESCs.

As well as the reliability issues of the Outcry.

Get a HobbyWing. Trust me. You'll love it.

The WP1060 is like the Axial AE-5, but it has the option of non crawler mode and no drag brake. Plus it's half the cost, but it's still waterproof.
WP1060: HOBBYWING North America — QUICRUN 16 Brushed ESC

The WP1080 is much more programmable and even comes with the programming card. Again, it's waterproof.

I didn't like the AE-2, but it was world's better than the AE-5. If you're looking to upgrade over the AE-5 I'd suggest the HobbyWing WP1080. It has an adjustable drag brake whereas the WP1060 does not.

Just picked up a cheap AE-5 for a friend's Wraith and it blew up on it's maiden run. We were 40 minutes into some light crawling and suddenly his Wraith went WOT. We grabbed it and tried everything, but the ESC just went WOT from the moment a battery was plugged in. Axial is warrantying it for him but it's backordered so he won't even get a new one until later November. Previously, I had an AE-5 that worked ok but I killed on my own accord from abuse.

I've heard a lot of issues with the AE-5. I only have one. It came in my SMT10. I used it for less than 10 battery packs and it was fine, but that's not much of a test. I took it out for a brushless system.

I had the Outcry in my TF2, big mistake. No lipo cutoff, poor low end control and died after a dozen runs. Trying to figure out what to put in next, might try the Hobbywing

I presume by "trans brake" you mean drag brake?
(being a drag racer I know a trans brake as a whole other component)

Even a basic Castle SW3 has the option to turn on drag brake
TowerHobbies.com | Castle Creations 1/10 Sidewinder 3 Waterproof ESC

But a BR-XL is nicer again
Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL - Speed Controllers - Electronics & Wiring

Though both are more than the HW esc's.

I hate the Castle SW3. It's huge, not the smoothest and a royal PITA to program without a Castle Link. The HobbyWing WP1080 has limitations, but it's less expensive. I'd recommend the HobbyWing over the SW3 all day.

If you insist on Castle look at the Mamba Micro-X.

The MMx is a nice little compact unit, I hadn't looked at them.
For a trail rig I'd be a bit concerned about heat build up in unit with so small a heat sink but it could be alright.

SW3 wouldn't be my first choice either, was more a reference to even it having drag brake.
SW3 does have the 213% crawler DB option, the highest HW option is 100%...if that's a critical thing to your driving.
At least the 1080 comes with the programming card as well

Quite frankly they are ALL a PITA to adjust without an external programmer, if your still doing it any other way you need either need therapy or your shortly going to.

I have read people using the Mamba Micro-X in SCX10's on this forum. It also shocked me that a mini scale ESC was working, but I guess it's overbuilt. John Holmes is a big proponent of that ESC.

Yes, the WP1080 comes with a programming card. And the best part is it has a separate programming port on the ESC. That way you don't have to open the receiver box, remove the leave from the receiver and plug the programming card into that. Instead you simply plug the programming card directly into the ESC.

FYI I burnt an ae5 this past Sunday; my truck took off and launched a 60ft cliff to flat ground. I'm never using brushed anything again. SMH

Yeah thank god my friend and I weren't crawling next to the river when his happened, we started hiking up a trail and suddenly it just cut loose. Otherwise someone would have been diving in the water after a brand new build...

There's nothing at all wrong with brushed. And this wasn't caused because your ESC and motor were brushed.
