Default Hardened Gears from Various vendors

Anyone that has used the various gearsets out (Axial, RC4WD, etc)
could yall give us a quick review on how you like them/how they are holding up?

My rear final and drive gave and I'm looking at upgrading.

Thanks!

After breaking about 5 or 6 of the stock gears I decided to buy the RC4WD gears for my front axle, Have had them in for over a month or two now and have not broken anything since, they are stout! It seemed like every time I drove my truck I was breaking a stock gear, I kept breaking the final gear and the stepped gear

I'm running the Axial gears. Nice and light weight, very strong and tolerances are slightly better than any of the other gears I have seen first hand.

I would also say to stay away from the Hot Racing gears. People seemed to start breaking them not long after they came out.

Just installed the RC4WD gears. Louder than stock, like most say but feel good. It's going to take a few packs and wear them in. Seem to be more drag/resistance in them. But I'm running stock plates/cases with bushings. So there's that playing a part too. I also was breaking everytime I drove the truck, just trying to stay cheap. That's the reason for these gears

If I recall correctly, only the rc4wd gearset has hardened gears.

All three manufacturers gears are machine cut, the HR's are advertised as a "lightweight" gearset, which probably tends to their durability

All Are stronger than stock gears because the stockers are sintered instead of being machine cut steel.

Axial's are hardened and light weight.

The HR's just suck because they are HR. It has to do with everything from material to tolerances.

From what I have heard, there has been some reports of ppl breaking Axial machined gears. I havent heard of any Rc4wd gear failures, I did lunch a bulkhead bearing and my Rc4wd gears ate the balls and one of the metal shields.

I thought I saw it in someones thread saying some guys at their comp blew some Axial Machined gears. I think you need to be really hard on these gears to blow any of them. I myself was thinking of getting the Axialmachined spools to get the slop out of my Rc4wd gears, meaning the shaft slop.

Shaft slop eh? Rotational or lateral?

And doesn't JP Customs offer a Lightweight spool of their own?

Locals in my club have busted axial machined gears, even with the VP goodies.

I just installed my rc4wd gears, and the only complaint I have with them is the slop, but I've done a mod to fix that.

Have yet to hear of anyone breaking an rc4wd gears.

RC4WD gears FTW!

It may have been on your thread that I read that.
What did you do to mod the gears?

I dropped a drop of welding rod(?) (I think it was that), on the end of the gear shaft (after I heated it up) then I filed off the excess material until it was nice and snug in the spool.

I figured that was easier then drilling and tapping into the locker to bolt the shaft down.

At the Texas State Finals a few weeks ago there were quite a few XR10s that I judged on my course and almost all of them were popping and making all kinds of noises. Most were running the Axial Machined gears. Then, along came 4xFord with his RC4WD gears. He beat the snot out of his truck and the didnt make a sound.

RC4WD knows how to build gears. My old Bully always sounded like a tractor, but I never had a single failure in the gears....
