| XR10 motor/esc options?
i plan on getting an xr10 pretty soon and im thinking of which motors/esc's to get. i was thinking of running dual tekin rs's with the tekin redline 17.5t brushless motors. would those be ok? if not i would just go with dual fxr's or dual rs's on holmes hobbies motors.

Can't go wrong with Holmes Hobbies. If I had the $$ that's what I would go with.

Best setup all around would be dual Tekin FXR's (not RS) with the Holmes motors. That's what most of us use in our XR10 rigs. Sent from outer space using my Star Trek communicator. |

For ESCs go with: -Dual Castle Mamba Micro Pros -Dual Castle Sidewinder Micros -Dual Tekin FXRs For motors go with BRUSHED units. -Holmes Hobbies Handwounds (Pick a series/price that works for you.His descriptions are very helpful) -Team Brood Handwounds Everyone has their preference...but many fall into some mix of what is described above. People have a brand that they support...Tekin or Castle are both great, and either will work well in your crawler. I personally run the following: In my Bully MOA - Dual Castle Mamba Micro Pros with Holmes Cobalt 454 16T motors In my Axial XR10 - Dual Castle Sidewinder Micros with Holmes Cobalt 454 18T motors I am a fan of Castle products....but if I ran across a pair of Tekin FXRs....I will put them in one of my crawlers and feel great about the choice. |

Totally agree with Xirtic. You can't go wrong with his advice. I have used both Tekin and Castle, both make good ESCs but I prfer the Tekins ( I also race on and off road with Tekin). I used to use a Mamba Micro in my 1/18th on-road car and that is the sidewinder micro of today with the added ability of controlling a brushed motor (the older ones are brushless only). |

FXR = $95 x 2 = $190 RS = $170 x 2 = $340 However if you want dig only then you will need a punk, Novak or RC4WD dig and one ESC since you will be using a brushed motor. If you still wanted to use brushless motors then you can't use a dig switch, you need two BL ESCs and a radio that can mix both. Last edited by AreCee; 12-31-2011 at 07:09 PM. | |

As AreCee stated cost and size increase of the RS vs FXR is a large factor. The chassis space is quite limited in the current crop of available chassis. Also the cost for any possible features that are in the RS do not really translate into a better crawling ESC. Costs: 2x Sidewinder Micros = $120 2x Mamba Micro Pros = $140 2x Tekin FXR = $190 2x Tekin RS = $340 so at almost 3x the cost of the Sidewinder Micros what does the RS buy in a crawler? The RS has more power handling...but is larger and heavier. ALL options still need an external BEC. The Sidewinder Micros are not the most mainstream of the choices. I run them for the size/weight savings, and accept the risk of them not being able to handle the motors that are run. They work for me...but not for everybody. While at 1/2 the cost of the RS are the Mamba Micro Pros and FXRs....these can handle just about everything that a crawler could need. The RS is just overkill. The sensored feature adds size/weight. It also runs 12ga wire....heavy and not needed in a crawler. If you have a pair, they will work..and probably well. But, if you are purchasing new, the cost just does not make sense when the other available options are just proven to work so well. The most expensive option is not always the right option. |

I believe that one of the lightest setups is the sidewinder micro combo though I have not seen what decased fxr's weigh. I run dual sidewinder micros with 45t tekin handwounds and am satisfied for the most part but once these motors fail I will be running dual 40t broods for that extra kick. I have never had a heat issue at all running the sidewinders either so no worries there with the 40t motors I think, have heard of heat issues running 35t on these though. 850mah packs 3s lipos fit the xr quite nicely but if you run small packs make sure to get the most c rating you can because they dont handle loads as well as the higher mah packs will. I think a 45+ c rating is a must and is worth every penny in all the situations me and fred0000 have seen with our rigs. Look at turnigy nano tech packs or I use the thunderpower 65c packs. I also run a futaba 4pl to get the most out of a dual esc setup and for the money it really can't be beat. I know you didnt ask about all this but I thought it cant hurt to tell you. Here is a picture of all this sitting on a bwd xr long electronics tray Last edited by kurtus; 12-31-2011 at 08:25 PM. |
