Default new chassis decision time. comments welcome

ok, i'm looking into a new chassis. currently running the viper 1 and want to upgrade. i'm trying to decide on either the viper 2 or the bwd "the thing". what i'm looking for is for those who have either one to comment on the pros and cons performance wise (in their experience). input will be much appreciated. thanks.

I will throw the T1e Sniper out there. It is a new chassis and flat out works! Nick has the Ti links figured out as well and it should be an unbeatable package when put together.

Yeah I figured as much. The main issue I have with the og viper is that the roll over capability is not great. I did notice that the viper2 has more of a dome cab. Any thoughts on this?

The viper 2 is a good chassis, my suggestion would be t1e sniper, y-town secret agent 3.5, if u can find one a y-town bj v4.2, chaotic switch, or my personal last choice after the previous 4 would be the viper 2. I currently have the uptown v4 in carbon fiber and will soon go to the sa 3.5 once funds allow.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way but I'm very aware of what's out there, but I have narrowed the 2 options mentioned to what will work best for my needs. I'm a leisure crawler with the occasional comp fun.

I highly rate my Thing chassis, you really could not ask for a more complete chassis kit. As it comes with both the upper and lower links. Performance wise it does really well with little tuning needed to get it to a high performing state. I have not changed my link positions since I built it and roll recovery is awesome. It was also good enough to take me to fourth in the recent Australian Nationals. HTH

If you want rare, CreationFab RD1

But in all honesty, you really can't go wrong with any of the above recommendations. All are comp proven winners.

There are plenty of good chassis out there for the XR axles. I've been liking my Secret Agent 4.0.

It had definitively been approved upon. Honestly though, I've spent a lot of time watching my truck and not getting in spots where it'll be on its roof.

Well I will re-phrase that. It works extremely well and the national/world champ a few times over (gatekeeper Austin Dunn) is dominating with his sniper so far and has finished 1st in every comp he has been in with it if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure there are other chassis that work great as well but the sniper is my choice after seeing many others in action and Nick's service is top notch.

That's the way to do it and what I need to improve on but I'm still learning and its getting better as each comp goes on.

Depending on what hardware you use, most of these competition chassis seem to average 2.2-2.5oz The RD1 I'm building checked in at 2.4oz with Stainless hardware. My SA was about the same, but used mostly aluminum hardware. That said the SA had delrin cross bars while the RD1 had aluminum.

So I think the weight of these chassis are a wash.

If that's the case then pick the one that you prefer the looks of.

My Delrin Thing has an RTR weight of 4.53lb. the rig has been on a diet but not as extensively as some other rigs.

Here's a big factor to consider. The Thing comes in various configurations & are offered with complete link kits. You can get it made out OD delrin or CF, in narrow or wide skid versions, and get the links in delrin of titanium.

The Viper2 seems to have only the standard and the CF "Lite" version, and no link kits are provided, or even offered by a third party.

I think the Viper 2 brings a little more innovation to it's design though. I kinda like the stepped skid design and the front shock mount. I'm not too sure how that skid design works in the real world, but innovation is what pushes this segment of RC further and further,

That said, although I've a fan of BWD products (and still run an SSS-R) I think the Viper 2 wins in the looks department.
