Default Flying with instruments

No, not that kind of instruments, musical instruments.

My brother in law will be flying home next week and he is taking my bass guitar with him. I am thinking it would be dreadfully stupid to check it as luggage. Do you just take it as a carry on?

i don't think you'd be allowed to take it as a carry on. most of travle suitcases are the dimensions that you are allowed to bring as a carry on item. and i am pretty sure a guitar case is bigger than that...

Unless you have a good flight case for your bass, you are pretty much screwed. I have flight cases for guitars and have never had an issue checking them and traveling with them. They will not let you carry them on any more.

"If it doesn't fit in this little box, you can't check it..."

Guitars are just too long... If you're going to fly a lot with it, invest in a good case. Otherwise, I'd get a sturdy cardboard box and pack the crap out of it, and put something REAL sturdy the length of the box so the neck doesn't snap...

putting a "fragile" sticker on it does nothing, BTW, I've flown with delicate electronics for work many times, with stickers like "fragile", "US Government Property", "This side up" "Delicate Instruments" etc on the boxes, and I've seen them THROW them onto the conveyor belts under the plane, and they show up upside down on the baggage claim...

Thanks

Just the info I needed.

I flew with my guitar, once, 15+ years ago. Then, I just carried it on and put it in the overhead. I thought things had changed. We have talked about building a good box for it (wood). Or he might just leave it here till he drives up again.

Thanks again
