| New forum search tool for Subscribed members (star)
I made some changes to the back end of RCC last night. I enabled the MySQL based (database) Fulltext search engine. Now that were using the Fulltext search I was able to enable the Boolean search option, which allows you to search for phrases and use other "Boolean" search features. Right now I have the Boolean search option enabled star members only to conserve resources for those that support RCC. An example of a phrase search is "rock crusher", this will do a search using both words together. Before that same search would separate each of the words and do a search on the individual words i.e. "rock" "crusher" giving you results for both the individual words. Also, A Boolean search is made up of keywords connected by the logical operators AND, OR and NOT. Computers cannot understand human language, but they can match words. By using a combination of keywords and Boolean operators you will improve the results of your search. Example: If you want to read about Axial shock setups, the following Boolean search will yield relevant results. axial AND (shock OR suspension) |

Should I give him a free green star subscription for a year for reminding me to enable this cool feature that most of us can enjoy? I am sure that Google and Jeeves use similar but much more sophisticated searching functions. Last edited by badger; 01-29-2008 at 11:21 AM.

Thanks. I use a variety of methods to search here, but this will help narrow the results. I usually use the "search this forum" or "search this thread" tools. Sometimes I even search using Google with the "(insert searchterm) site:www.rccrawler.com" command. All the information IS here. You just have to find it and be sure it is still topical. It's funny to read the info posted back in 2005 compared to last year. Moab tires, for instance. |

This should help a lot of the noobs such as myself. Hopefully it will cut down on all the repetitive posts.

It seems like there is always too much work to be done. I'll take any help I can get to kick me in the ass to remember to do something.

Now you can make better use out of different words that have the same meaning like in your example "asshole" and "young version". Example: If you want to search about Hawaiian assholes, the following Boolean search will yield relevant results. Hawaiian AND (asshole OR young version) Make sense?
