| B-17 Liberty Belle
Last weekend the WWII B-17 Bomber "Liberty Belle" made a stop at the local airfield. It was giving rides (for a price of course , it costs around $4,000 an hour to operate) to customers and free for veterans . I am a B-17 enthusiast. My grandfather was part of the 8th Air Force during WWII. I've flown the EAA's "Aluminum Overcast" twice, and it's an awesome experience. There are only a handful still flying. I'm currently on the rebuild team for the CAF's B-24 Liberator. I also signed up as a volunteer for the "Libery Belle" this weekend after talking to the guys. I think it is important to keep this history alive. Here are a few pics I snapped while out there. I did some of them in B&W to get that WWII effect. I was out there all day Saturday and Sunday. Got sun burned, but well worth it . |

That's just beautiful Really cool that you're able to help keep 'em flying, too. |

That is really cool I love them old birds and my dad really loved all of WWII stuff. He always wanted to fly in a B-17 and the last time it came to Seattle he did not have the extra money he was putting back for a Tuna fishing trip. That was about the only thing he enjoyed more fishing. Great pics. thanks for sharing.

Very lucky. Most of the Warbirds left today are still around because of volunteers working their weekends to fabricate 80% of the parts and private contributions. Also, scouring old scrap yards and flea markets. It can take years before one can become airworthy, but once it's done, it is very rewarding. I'm only 28, but it disappoints me of how many people could care less about perserving this history :-(. If it wasn't for the B-17 and the brave men who crewed them (and "Rosie the Riveter") and all the veterans of WWII, we wouldn't be able to have the freedom we have now, and that we tend to take for granted sometimes. Just my 2 cents. | |
