PONDERING INDEPENDENCE

A beacon of liberty

Since America gained independence, we have vanquished the colonial oppression of the British, French and Spanish empires, abolished slavery on our own accord and extended unprecedented liberty and freedom to all citizens.
In the 20th century, we liberated Europe from the brutality of Nazism and fascism, and the countries of the Pacific from the domination of Imperial Japan. Then we protected Europe and the world from the expansion of the Soviet Empire. In winning the Cold War we liberated Eastern Europe from Communist oppression.
Today we lead the struggle against Islamist oppression and terrorism. We have liberated the people of Afghanistan and Iraq from the tyranny of Islamic fascism. We have successfully put the people of Iraq on the path of a democratic society and in doing so we plant the seeds of democracy and freedom that will grow to defeat terrorism.
Not so bad for a young upstart of a country. On this day we should remember American independence has done more to further human rights and freedom around the world by action and example than the United Nations or any other country. Happy birthday, America, and may you have many more.
