| Bonding Aluminum?
Any one ever use jb weld or any other type of epoxy in place of screws for gluing alluninum? I'm making a mount/platform for a small scale cannon/ mortar, and it's a bit to small to use screws. It will fire blanks so there will be some force on it but not allot. There is a picture to a link below of what I am making, the alluninum plates will be probally 1/4 inch thick. Will jb work? Any better Ideas? Thanks! http://www.civilwarartillery.com/cwi...n13Mortars.jpg |

3M VBH double sided tape. if it can hold an airplane wing on, i think it'll work for you, plus no drying time! http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3.../Applications/ |

I've used JB weld to bond 1/4 inch aluminium parts together before. Didn't break yet. I first did a test to see if it would work. I took two pieces of 1/4 inch flat 6061 aluminium and sanded them to get a good surface for bonding. Put the JB between the two and let them dry for two days just to make sure. I did offset the two pieces because the test was to put them in a vise and try to push or pull them apart. To my surprise the metal snapped but the JB held strong. I had no idea how strong this stuff was until i did that.

my guess is that an epoxy would hold up better than JB weld. 30 min or 45 min epoxy will give a little and be less likely to break under shock loads than the more brittle JB.
