Default 1997 Toyota FZJ80

Well, I am in Colombia for the summer where my Dad lives, and he's got a 1997 FZJ80. Thought I would post some not so recent pictures of it, while I take new ones when we go off roading in it.

It has a manual transmission, which is awesome, and front locking hubs. Talk about basic. At least it has power windows and A/C!

When it was bought:

And when it was repainted and rims sprayed black:

My Dad helped out in a rally with it, and we might race in one soon I hope:

And with the Safari snorkel:

So yea, it is fun as heck to drive stick shift in the mountains. Crazy at first, but I am getting used to it.

Wouldn't a 97 be a 40th anniversary?

What does one of those cost around there?

Well, trucks in Colombia are pretty expensive, so it kinda cost like $20,000 or less. I know it is a lot, but cars here are freaking crazy expensive.

Is it the 40th anniversary? I know there were the special editions, but this isn't one of them.

An FZJ80 in Miami can go for like $7500 more or less, but still automatic, and no manual front hubs and manual transfer case.

Taken from wikipedia:

1997- An unknown number of FZJ-80 Land Cruisers were sold in the United States as "40th Anniversary Limited Edition" models. They were available in 2 colours; Antique Sage Pearl (Often referred to as Riverrock, Pewter or Grey) and Emerald Green. The 40th Anniversary models included apron badging, a serial number badge on the centre console, black pearl exterior badges, "40th Anniversary Limited Edition" embroidered floor mats, automatic climate control, two-tone tan and brown leather interiors and wheels with the "D" windows painted dark gray. Many were manufactured with the optional electric front and rear locking differentials, keyless entry, port-installed roof racks and running boards. There are some examples that did not have many of these extras.

So there were Special Editions. This one just isn't one of them.

Less electronics, less to break.

Ditto, I have been looking for a 80 series for awhile but most are out of my reach $$$$$wise because they hold thier value. So I ended up buying this instead:

Nice! I like Disco's.
Any full pictures?
Is your FJ60 manual?

The 80 series is expensive just because it is a Toyota. A really good one, but Toyota basically.

To the best of my knowledge all american market FJ60's came with a 4 speed manual, FJ62 and newer all got slushboxes, no options.

And that feedback carburetor on your dad's rig makes me shudder. If it was mine it'd get an american market EFI setup post haste.

And I bet 666 is wishing he sprang for the FZJ anyways

So that is the Disocvery?

So the carburetor is not good? I mean, we took it to the mechanic today to fix something in it as it was having some rought starts, sometimes it would turn on on the second try, and not the first.

I've had all the fun I can stand with carburetors. The slosh on the trail, pollute more, are generally less reliable, provide worse millage, etc...

Putting electronic control on it is like using a digital servo on a mechanical speed controller. it's just polishing a turd.

What's weird is that my Uncle here in Colombia also bought an FZJ80, but a 1998. And it came with fuel injection! One year difference.

Well see how this one does. So far, it has been good.

You have a lot to look forward too. The old Toyotas run forever if taken care of properly. I have a 1977 FJ40. Still runs great, just needs some more love (money) put in to it. Body work!!!

Do you have access to a press? Those caster bushings are a pain in the ass.

Well..we are taking it to the mechanic tomorrow to install that for us. I hope he has one. What does it look like?

Any information I should know to make it easier and that everything goes right?

I don't know about columbia, but around here any real mechanic shop should have one. Even with the toyota-issued special tools they're a pain, and I bet they're not really gonna ask that much (compared to an mechanic up here in the states anyways) so I would pass a few extra pesos to the guy who does it.
