Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build Hello all! I am new here to the forum and crawling but had quite a few RC cars and boats when I was younger. Alot has happened since then though! Originally from Doylestown, PA I have been living in Stockholm Sweden for the last 13 years. Since moving here I have become quite involved in the 1:1 off-road scene. My vehicle of choice is a 1969 Volvo Laplander, a former Swedish military 4x4. right now I am in the process of totally renovating it. You can follow that progress here. http://www.soost.com/valpen Here she is in Rondane Norway 2 years ago before I added my Front Runner roofrack and VisionX lighting. http://www.soost.com/rondane.jpg Since alot has happened I really do not know what there are for options. Who's frame I should base my build on? Should I have a frame built? Axels? Transmissions? What scale? Anyone that can make me a fantastic quality hard body.....? I think you get the idea. Here are the measurements. http://www.soost.com/rc/measurements.jpg What will make this build more special and maybe even a little complicated is that I also want to make a copy of my PTO driven trailer! "thumbsup" To best see what I mean you can see it in action here. (note: the truck the trailer is connected to is a friends since mine is being renovated. his truck is lacking a lot of horsepower due to a tried engine and carburetor) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JwHQ0PbAU They trailer is from Volvo. What they did was to take the same frame as my truck, cut is in half leaving the rear axel. They then added a PTO through the truck rear bumper to then connect it to another transfer case on the trailer to then drive the trailer axel. This giving me a 6x6 when I wish to engage the the trailer. The rear axel and the trailer axel are both limited slip diffs and the trucks front axel now has a Detroit LockRight Locker. In the next pic you can see how the power is tranferred via the blackened parts. http://www.soost.com/rc/trucktrailer.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/trailer1.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/trailer2.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/trailer3.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/trailer4.jpg Body pics http://www.soost.com/rc/body1.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/body2.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/body3.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/body4.jpg http://www.soost.com/rc/body5.jpg She looks top heavy but I have driven at 38 degress without laying on my side! One last pic and that is of the frame http://www.soost.com/rc/frame.jpg The part of the frame at the bottom of the pic is the front end of the truck. So as far as my RC build: Do I base my build on an existing product/frame/kit that someone sells? I would like to have the final result as close to my 1:1 as possible. My truck has leaf springs so I would like this build to have it as well. Then there is the PTO on the back of the truck. How should I solve this? Looking around I have seen some parts I would really like to have in this build. Remote controlled locking diffs. But does anyone make portal conversions to them? 1.9 or 2.2? DIG? What's that? I best let you guys come with some comments before I barf more questions. /Tedd |
looking at that frame in the picture I would say best bet is building it off a Tamiya Hilift kit or using the frame rails from a Semi Truck kit if the wb is better. |
Is it possible to buy that frame as a replacement without having to buy the entire truck kit? |
I would make my on frame .... And for the axles - http://www.bamatech.de/aktuell%20shop/index1.htm But they only fit 2.2 rims without beadlock .... |

Good luck with your build! *subscribed* |

BUT! Maybe I can at least have portals on my RC version? "thumbsup" I was in on the German site but I don't know any German. Do they have axels though for the 1/10 and 1/8 scale? |
We have a holiday home in Sweden (near Jönköping) and I hope someday I will have a C303 there as my "holiday car". That's why I am a bit into this stuff. Regarding Bamatech: I think they can make the 1:10-Axles on request. No idea on the pricing. Maybe Losi MRC-Axles plus 3racing Portals for the Axial AX10 could be an alternative? ...but they lack the PTO and I do not know if it is possible to convert this. |

I will check into their products more.... Thanks! |
Subscribed!! Cool ideas!! Interesting truck. With a bit more HP, would be a neat little traveler. Were the original motors, 4cy, laying on their sides? |

The original engine was a 1,8 liter 4cyl. Volvo gas engine called B18. I have since upgraded to the 2 liter B20. Here you can see some pics of it sitting in the frame. It sits vertically. http://www.soost.com/valpen/Fotovalp...ing_Day_1.html Info on the engines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_B20_engine The engine were from the beginning designed by an engine designer to be a diesel. Volvo saw the potentials of the design to be reliable and strong, bought the guys and designs and made it a gas engine instead. I have increased the hp of mine to approx. 97 hp and use a Weber 32/36 DGV carburetor. When done I will be using the truck as an Overland Expedition vehicle. |
Reading swedish works quite well... My spoken swedish shows huge potential for improvement. ;-) I need more practice. I'll have a look at the terrängbil forum. "thumbsup" |
Until I see what frame, axels and suspension I will use I have been playing around with the drive train. Has anyone here experience with this 3 speed 2WD engagable 4WD tranny? http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=281 Experience with the Killer case anyone? http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=545 Since I want this build to be as close to my 1:1.... Here's what I'm thinking. - Use the 3 speed tranny's full time drive to drive the Killer case. - The Killer case will then supply both front and rear axels with full time 4WD. - Then the engagable/disengagble outlet can be used for the trailer! Just as with my 1:1 I can engage and disengage it from the cab. http://www.soost.com/rc/trucktrailer2.jpg What do you think? |
If you can tear apart a 1:1 then you should have no problem with a scaler. That frame is a straight boxed frame and would be no problem, braze on a few crossmembers and you are set to go. |
Yes. I am playing with this idea. But I do not have the tooling to due this. My 1:1 is big but even there I have found different channels that have what I need so I do not have to invest in tooling. Right now I am looking more or less at all of RC4WD's products. First would be to build on their Rapture frame. http://http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/p...roducts_id=820 http://tracgear.com/product/rc4wd/el...4/DSC_9063.jpg |
Waooooooh Nice Valpen !! My parents crossed Afrika with one of those in the sixties |
good to see you getting started on this. i hope my advice found you well. looks like your on your way. definatly looking forward to this |
Don't know if you've seen this, but I bet you could do something similar http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/general-scale-talk/204383-2-speed-tranny-pto.html http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/2-2-scale-rigs/207045-project-bbw-big-burly-winch.html The RC4WD 3 speed is probably really heavy, which will hurt performance. The highlift trans is still heavy, but probably less so. That's a sweet laplander"thumbsup" |
Really nice! Hope you canget it to work with the PTO! (Jag kanske har en Tamiya 3-speed låda till salu snart. Det är jag som är Pvpjtgb1111 på terrängbil.net "thumbsup") |
Re: Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build hi! I plan to build a Volvo L3314 too, and I just found your thread. I haven't started building yet, still need some more styrene. I figured that 1/7,25 scale will fit my chassis perfectly. I'm going to make a thread on the forum when I start building :) |
Re: Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build it is great that this thread has popped up. i think i have my next project idea! i'm guessing that nobody makes a 1/10 body like this, right? i love the looks of this truck and want one. the body may be the last part of the project. i'm really excited about the idea of the PTO driven trailer. lots of mechanics to work out. |
Re: Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build I'd love to see this finished up , thought about doing one my self till I added up the coast of all the parts needed when I still need to finish 2 other projects. RC4WD also sells a 3 speed transfer case as well . If I was to build it I wanted it to function like the 1:1 and be able to cut the drive to the trailer and the front axle . Here is some links to an old build I've found. Scratch-built Volvo C303 body on CC-01 - Scale 4x4 R/C Forums Volvo c303 Revisited And a link to a guy who makes portal axle adapters for Axial axles. Portal Axle - Axial AX10, SCX10, 4x4x4 by ale-x-treme on Shapeways |

if any else is working on one of these I hope they share. |
Re: Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build I wouldn't use the venom tranny. I've heard nothing but bad things about it , though I'm sure its the cheapest option. Maybe the Vanquish dig unit on the ax10 tranny. Or the RC4WD 3 speed tranny coupled with there 3 speed transfer . At any rate it will be a heavy rig. Good luck I'll keep an eye open for the build for sure. |

if I get to building I will start a build thread myself. |
Since I migrated my website to a new server I see that many of the images are not found. The project hasn't gotten anywhere as I have been put off by the fact I need help building my Volvo Valp body. Since buying my son the Axial 2012 Jeep for Christmas I have to have something so we can drive together. So I am opting to go with something else and building a PTO powered trailer to it instead. Thinking of trying to make the build from the SCX10. Thoughts? What I want to do is go with a multi channel radio so I have 2 channels for the winches that will be on the front of the truck and on the back of the trailer. Then an additional channel so I can engage and disengage the rear PTO that will power the trailer. Thinking of using a R2 Black Tranny with Disconnect Where the disconnect side would engage and disengage the PTO on the rear bumper for the trailer. This will be in the rear bumper The constant side would connect to a Triton Transfer Case (1:1) that in turn will provide full-time 4WD to the truck. Here's my 1:1 rig and idea for my RC build in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahHJ...HvICrDsf1Jk5jg MUAHAHAHA! Just waiting on the frame rails and SCX10 back axle so I can build the Expo Trailer! |
