Default 2-speed tranny with PTO!

Finally figured out how to make this sucker work

Starting with a couple of Hi-Lift 3-speeds, I did some cutting and hacking. The 2-speed bit was easy, simply cut the shafts to eliminate third gear, glue the dogs together and tweak here and there:

It's a good bit shorter than the 3-speed, and uses TLT chassis braces as spacers. But here's the good part:

I meshed an unused third gear with first gear, and installed a dog clutch. This runs the PTO at a fair clip, with about the same ratio as second gear overall. The plan is to run a winch off the PTO. I have a TLT axle with one broken shaft that should make a pretty stout winch.

Here's how it works:

First gear, PTO disengaged

Second gear, PTO disengaged

Second gear, PTO engaged. I'll probably never use it this way, but it's available.

Neutral, PTO engaged.

I'd like to run both shift rods off a single channel, but this may not be possible. I'll play with it some more and see what I can do there. I'll also need to rig a transfer case as the layshaft is too close to the spur gear to allow a U-joint up front.

Advantages over an electric winch: power and cool factor.

I think the "cool factor" is off the scale . I've always wanted to retrofit that trans into something, but you took it a step further. Nice!

Right. What the hell do I do with a full-width TLT axle mounted up front? I don't want my winch line coming out of the headlight.

The solution (naturally) is to hack something up, in this case the axle.

Upper output is a TA0something drive cup, lower is the broken axle shaft cut to length with a 5mm prop adapter converted to a winch drum.

Where do yo come up with this stuff Stu? Def' cool. I'm curious to see how much power this setup might have. I smell an M37 build coming on...

I'm already designing V 2.0 in my head, with separate front & rear outputs. The original setup with the full-width axle would make for a bad-ass tow truck.

Scary, but we think alot alike .
So, you have the tranny in neutral, but have the PTO engaged? So you can vary the speed of the winch without the truck driving? That's just cool. My head is spinning just thinking of the possibilities.........

As a bonus, it should be real easy to pay out the winch line with the PTO disengaged.

Damn Stu, I've been thinking about this since I put the 3-speed in the OG Yota but I was going to use 1st and 3rd. Thanks for posting this! Oh, great job on the PTO. That's a bonus!

PTO = Power Take Off: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_take-off

I'm slowly assembling the bits needed to make a rig around this thing.

Looks like I'm going to need a more-channel radio, too. There's no way around that. But it should be ready for manual-mode testing soon.

Don't forget, you'll need a dig installed to keep the truck from rolling away when you shift into neutral.

Make an E-brake out of a nitro brake! That would be tits, and scale

You know, cause you're gonna get the more channel radio anyways. Find a way to put 10 or 15 servos on that thing!
