| What's everyone's take on rc "clones"?
I know the knock-off's of certain vehicles, parts and electronics have been around for awhile. Many have bought them both unknowingly and with full knowledge of lack of authenticity. Is there a purists atitude toward these vehicles, parts and electronics here among the RCC forum members, or is there acceptance of the fact that these knock-off whatever are viable alternatives? Just curious to get a pulse of the perception of RCC members. |

Really wanna know? Search the forums for "Komodo" and scroll through those threads. You'll get your answer live as the drama unfolds! Also check out the threads on the 3Racing winch, particularly the early ones. Lotsa commentary on the state of knockoffs there, too.

Typically you get what you pay for. For example I have 2 broken 3 racing winches that I need to throw in the trash.

Doesn't bother me. Competition is competition. I will always buy quality parts, though. Knock off companies are trying to appeal to a different crowd. Which can be good for the R/C community. |

I will only buy a knockoff if the original part is no longer in production or is at an obscene price. Otherwise they can go fawk themselves. |

If the knock off is cheaper than the original and just as good then I'm going for the it but most of the time they're crap so I buy originals.

It's a bit of a slap in the face for the original designer, but for the price of some clone parts it is hard to pass up. Specifically the 5b and clones that go with that. I will never own a cloned rc or part, but for guys on a budget, I guess so.

I take it on a case by case basis. P.S. sure wish somebody would make a knock off M2 Dig 3s. Might be able to get that one faster. |

The way I see it is if you are copying something you paid for for your own personal use then no biggy, but to clone someones hard work and r+d for profit is bullshiz.

I think it depends on the specific product. If someone were to copy a plain wheel, that is ok, if someone copies a wheel that has an innovation, like the VP DH etc... that would not be cool. I think that many people who buy clones, end up buying the real thing later. |

dont trash them, send them to me As for knock offs, it doesn't bother me 1 bit. Seems like theres another company expanding the rccrawling community. But like said before, most likely, everyone will go back to the original designers product. | |

There is absolutly no loyalty to design rights in any form of RC I've ever been involved in the Scale Off Road winch is a perfect example the 3R is almost a perfect copy at 1/10 the cost. Behind every RCer there's a spouse/ significant other who thinks the toy budget spending is ridiculous. I've known more than one marriage/relationship that was destroyed by excessive toy spending (not only RC) that said cost rules.

Some say that imitation, is the ultimate form of flattery. I say imitation, is the ultimate form of a lack of creativity.
