This happened Friday at the Grand Canyon. Some kind of temperature inversion filled the whole canyon with clouds with a clear sky above.

That must be what happened in '09 when we went to Moab. We'd just made it to the top of Cliff Hanger. Clear skies above, but clouds below. One of the coolest things I've ever witnessed firsthand. Not sure if this video will work, but here ya go...

I saw a show about them making that, it is the largest viewing "window" on an aquarium, and is like 5' thick. Atlanta has 2 whale sharks in their aquarium too.

The manufacturing process of that glass would have been nice to watch.

Yep. I know sure about the thermo-whatever reasons as to why, but in places like that where colder air can settle, the warmer air on top can create clouds. Happens around the world, and not particularly rare to the Grand Canyon, happening several days in a row is not very common.

Pretty sure it's acrylic. Not glass. Glass tends to get green. And I believe it's somewhere around 2ft thick, not 5ft.

You're right, I remembered incorrectly, from wiki;
"The main tank, called the Kuroshio Sea, is 35 metres (115 ft) long, 27 metres (89 ft) wide and 10 metres (33 ft) deep.[5] It holds 7,500 cubic metres (1,981,000 US gal) of water and features an acrylic glass panel measuring 8.2 by 22.5 metres (27 by 74 ft) with a thickness of 60 centimetres (24 in),[6] the largest such panel in the world when the aquarium was opened."

I can do it with transparent aluminum that's only 1" thick.

From Star Trek IV, but the funny thing is it's sort of true.

This is from Wiki.
Quote:
Aluminium oxynitride or AlON is a transparent polycrystalline ceramic with cubic spinel crystal structure composed of aluminium, oxygen and nitrogen. It is currently marketed under the name ALON by Surmet Corporation.[3] ALON is optically transparent (≥80%) in the near-ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is 4 times harder than fused silica glass, 85% as hard as sapphire and nearly 15% harder than magnesium aluminate spinel. The material is stable up to 1,200 °C (2,190 °F).[1] It can be fabricated to transparent windows, plates, domes, rods, tubes and other forms using conventional ceramic powder processing techniques. Because of its relatively low weight, optical and mechanical properties, and its resistance to damage due to oxidation or radiation, it shows promise for use as infrared, high-temperature and ballistic- and blast-resistant windows. Manufacturing methods continue to be refined. The cost is similar to synthetic sapphire.
Here it is in action.
