Default Byte Math

Looking for advice here. Ive always been under the impression that totaling byte usage was straightforward addition, however recently I was told its not quite like that.

Basically Im wondering what the absolute minimum RAM would be to run two programs that "recommend" 1g & 512m?

TIA, Jon

IMO the absolute minimum RAM is 2gb for XP and 4gb for Vista+. Any less than this ups the likelihood of you smashing the thing to pieces while you endlessly wait.
