| What kind of boat is this
We are on vacation in Gulf Shores AL and have seen a few of these boats and was wondering what they are used for. Last edited by tinycrites; 09-15-2010 at 02:01 AM. |

Almost looks like a simple work platform. I think those vertical columns extend down to secure the "barge" to the sea bed. ??

It's called a Jack Up Barge. You can motor to your work site and then hydraulics push the legs down through the hull until they hit bottom. Then the barge can be lifted up out of the water. We used to use those all the time when I was a Commercial Diver in the oil fields. They are great because you don't have to work on a moving vessel and when big waves come in you just jack it up higher. Last edited by Grizzly4x4; 09-15-2010 at 11:40 AM. |

Here's an extreme example of what you can do with one. We used to lift it up about 20ft above the water and use them for our diving operations. They come in many sizes of course depending on the water depth you are working in. |

No problemo, I miss working on them. It gets interesting when you go to leave and have to pull the legs up. You have to secure everything on the deck, close all the water tight doors, and all people must go to the wheel house at the top. If the legs get stuck in the mud the captain will continue to pull the legs up which sinks the barge under water. Hopefully the force generated by the barge trying to float will pull the legs out of the mud. I've been on them when we had the deck 10 ft under water... If they get really stuck you send down a diver to dig out the mud around the legs. |
