“There’s just some catastrophic damage to the car. Some of the cage tubing was .125 and some .180 wall, and the tubing actually ripped. I’ve never seen tubing actually rip right in the middle. That was a little bit of force. Some are saying the weld broke or someone didn’t know what they were doing, but you can tell by the impact on that passenger side that it was a fairly tremendous hit so I can see the weld breaking. It didn’t have any gussets welded in and was a basic 10-point. It did a good job, but it went through a lot of stress.”
looks like that cage was made out of hot rolled tube rather than DOM. i don't know how much different the car would look now but either way he's lucky to walk away from that.

That right there goes to show why you need gussets in the corners and some .180 wall all the way around. I my self wont race anything fast with just a standard 10pt roll cage I have to have a lil more than that. an ill be damned if i ever wear a "DING DONG" belt again either.

Looks to me to be DOM. And it looks like it did its job pretty well. Theses cages are not designed to wreck and be raced again. If it would have been made to with stand the crash (meaning it would still be fixable or able to race again) I would bet the driver would have been hurt. Its just like when the fuelers crash they are made to crumple and brake away leaving just the cockpit.

I been working on a turbo 96 camero lately, weighs in just under 3700lb's, it's still never hooked up good and so far best has been 8.61 at 168 mph, and that's here at denver altitude. The cage in the car is what the rules required and was NHRA certified to 8.50. It really amazed me that's all they wanted to run a heavy car that fast and personally I wouldn't drive it without alittle more cage work but as you can see by what happened to this guy it will keep a driver alive in a big crash. I too bet if it had a huge rigid cage in it the driver woulda had more than bumps and bruises.
