a good used netbook would be my suggestion. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...010&CatId=3988 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...Sku=H24-100029 fairly cheap, and still can do most things a better laptop can do. |

We bought our 12 year old the little mini Laptop from Dell. It's good for them of that age. |

Agreed with the gents above, I have a "full-size" Dell laptop and my girlfriend has a "netbook" from Dell. It's a good little machine, the only downside is that you don't have a CD drive for software. But you can pick up a cheaper usb cd/dvd drive that will work of need be. I would buy one with the least amount of "included" software possible (just the OS, and any "required" software for the machine to work) the reason I say that is there are a number of free open-source software options for things like "Microsoft Office" and getting a bare bones version will save you some cash, as well as give you the chance to "un-bloat" the factory software (and spyware) that comes installed. PM me if you would a list of some of the open source stuff...if not it's still a good option.

X2 on the netbook. I think I saw Radio Shack had them on sale for $150 or something.

our 6 year old has an acer netbook that we got a couple years back at wal mart for like 180...has been holding up ok to the abuse....a 10 year old will more then likely take better care of one...

I have and am using a Toshiba full size laptop. Screen is nice and clear, pretty quick and has enough room for what I use it for. Got it at Best buy for just under $400. The netbooks do not have a disk drive as far as I know, so there would be no cd loads or dvd waching.

I would say a full size laptop. We have a netbook and it is cool but with no CDR/DVD you have a hard time using any games or educational software.

last year we bought my 10yo daughter and 8yo son both Dell inspiron 1545s. we thought about the net books but for alittle more $ you get a bigger laptop. By the time you buy an external cd/dvd drive you're into it about the same.
